#240 BEST OF | Can You Exercise The Booze Away?

Many lives have been ruined by alcohol consumption.

No, not alcoholism… but the long term effects of drinking alcohol.

Things like diabetes, cancer, heart disease, weight gain and hormone problems are all potential negative side effects.

So when a study claims that exercise can cancel the negative effects of alcohol, we perk right up and take notice.

Is the information legit? Listen to this episode to find out.

What We Covered:

  • The basic physiology that explains why alcohol is bad for you.
  • The basic physiology of exercise.
  • Exercise standards.
  • If you can actually 'negate' your alcohol consumption by exercising.

#239 Coconut Oil Is Not Good For You?

The article points out (some of) the benefits and positive health effects of eating coconut oil yet, the conclusion remains "don't eat it, it's bad for you."

Not quite sure we understand exactly what's at play, but you're probably as confused as we are...

Make no mistake about it; most fats are good for you including saturated fats. The research and data build a stronger and stronger case every with each new study. Yes, there are some, despite the openly clear evidence, that do not want to see what's right in front of their noses.

The purpose of this podcast is to try to untangle this horrible mess of an article while getting you to see the big picture of why fat (particularity saturated fat) should be a staple of your diet.

What we cover:
  • The most important concept Life By Design has developed and supported is the principle of requirements and strategies and it is the secret to solving this confusing and contradictory article.
  • Why fat, especially saturated fat, is an absolute must for your body.
  • Why you shouldn't listen to large government-funded agencies for any advice, let alone health care advice.
  • Our thoughts on why we think coconut oil and saturated fat are consistently being dumped on by popular media.
  • Our best attempt at trying to solve the non-sequitur conclusion of 'don't eat coconut oil' despite the authors admitting to some of the benefits of coconut and MCT oil.

#238 Cartwheels Now Banned At School

#238 Cartwheels Now Banned At School

Yes, it's true!   You'll probably have to read this article a couple of times to really come to grips with what's being said.   What's even more shocking is that at the end of the article you can see that in other places even balls have been banned from schools.   On the surface, this might seem like no big deal "It's just cartwheels and balls, who really cares?" But, there is something much bigger happening under the surface and that 'much bigger' is the development of self-responsibility.   As Dr. Nathaniel Branden taught us, the practice of Self-Responsibility is a pillar for creating high self-esteem in your child. It's a way of helping your child realize that their actions have real consequences to their life and if they fail to accept responsibility for things they did; they might be stuck in an awful life.    The purpose of this podcast is to discuss the proper development of self-responsibility in children, how we completely agree that as a parent it's very likely one of your goals (or should be) and how you can facilitate the development of responsibility in your child.    What we covered:

  • The 6 Pillars Of Self-Esteem, specifically the Practice of Self-Responsibility.
  • Why letting kids fail (in this case get hurt, or maybe even injured) is central and pivotal to the development of adults, and why bypassing this responsibility will create nothing but older children who are unable to manage the stress of adulthood.
  • Why it's important to remember that the flip side of risk is reward and every time we limit what our children can (or should be able to do) we are in fact limiting a potential reward they could be experiencing. Is it worth it?

#237 Is Your Child Ready For Sick Season?

#237 Is Your Child Ready For Sick Season?

Back to school, back to routine, back to being busy.

Back to school is my favorite time of year. It reminds me of fall, football, warm and cozy sweaters...all of which make this my favorite season.

Unfortunately, it leads to winter which is not awesome in this part of the world, but I guess that all comes with the territory.

What also tends to follow the change of seasons is the onslaught of cold and flu season. Sound about right?

But what if it didn't have to be that way?

What if there was a chance, just maybe, that we're looking at this whole germ thing the wrong way?

I mean seriously thinking about it... I bet you that you know someone who is never sick. So it begs the question, how did they get that way, what can we learn from them and, can we duplicate the results?

The purpose of this episode is to help you create a plan of action that will create a stronger, better immune system for your child and keep them from being sick on a more consistent basis.

What we covered:

  • Why germs are not the cause of your child's sickness (flu, cold or otherwise) or illness and the real underlying reason your kid gets sick. I know this sounds shocking, but it's honestly a game changer if you can apply it and make it real for your family.
  • What the most controllable factor is in keeping your children healthy and as sickness free as possible as they groove their way into the new school year.
  • The importance of the nerve system in fighting off infection. This is the most overlooked area of health for most families.
  • 4 other vital steps to include to keeping your child healthy.

#236 How to Handle Back to School Anxiety

#236 How to Handle Back to School Anxiety

This week Dr. Kreso and Dr. Rachelle's son Ari started Montessori full time.    As it turned out, Ari was not quite ready to be away from his mom for such a long period of time, so Kreso and Rachelle decided that the right thing to do would be to focus on half days only.   Why should you care about that?   Our intuition is telling us that sometimes we (ourselves included) put a short term vision for our children ahead of the long term goals we have for them.    Sometimes it's easy to substitute what you want for your kids future for what they can handle in that moment.    There is no judgment with that statement - in fact, we are making it from experience.    It's easy to get caught up with what others are doing and how quickly some kids develop vs. other kids. We feel like it's important to never compare kids but to keep our eyes on the long term prize.    The purpose of this episode is to take a step back from the 'parenting game' and make sure we are keeping the end goal in mind.    What we cover:

  • What, in our opinion, is the purpose of parenting and what we really dislike about today's parenting trends. There are just some trends these days that are wrong and we need to talk about them.
  • Why the long game is far more important than the short game, yet it seems like most parents are concerned with short term success over the long term gain.
  • Why self-esteem and creating a winning inner state is really where long term success is at and how we think you can do that.

#235 Who Do You Owe?

#235 Who Do You Owe?

Have you ever wondered why the world seems like such a mess sometimes?   Why does it still feel like we live in the dark ages - especially when it comes to the way people treat each other?    We've been taught, for generations, that the plight of the world is caused by people who only care about themselves.   But could that be wrong? And, what's wrong with loving yourself? Is it really that bad?   Well, if you ask us, not only is loving yourself the beginning to your happiness and quality of life, but it's also the beginning of making the world a better place. Trust us, we know how crazy that might sound, and we're not asking you to believe us; just give us listen and see if you agree.   The purpose of this podcast is to help you understand how important you (the individual) are to enjoying your life on this planet and why favoring the group over the individual is a cause of a lot of human suffering.   What we covered:

  • It's easy to sense the political injustice in the world; which is a fair assessment. However, more challenging and ALMOST completely ignored - is the philosophical roots of politics, namely metaphysics, epistemology, and ethics. No this is not a political podcast, and we won't spend much time on the topic, but we guarantee that if you can get morality right - politics will follow suit.
  • Why it's OK (good in fact) to value yourself first. No, this doesn't make you a jerk, or hateful of other people, in fact, it's the only way to properly establish the right foundation for human flourishing.
  • How to begin to value yourself more and what that will make your life look like. Trust us - you'll love it.

#234 Why Grades Are Not Most Important

#234 Why Grades Are Not Most Important

Like it or not, every year this time comes.   Summer is ending and the fall is moving in means that school is on the way. In some parts of the world, you're kids are already in school.   Either way, the start of the school year is an interesting time for everybody. There are new dynamics needing to be dealt with, new relationships, the ending of some relationships, studying, stress, growth, and everything in between.   How can you ensure that your child and your whole family adapt to the coming school year in the best way possible?   What can you do to increase the likelihood that your child and family successfully meet the challenges of future life at school (and beyond) to the best of your ability...with the least amount of harm?   The principle at play is adaptability.   There is no question your child and your family will be under stress; the real concern is can you adapt to that stress or is it going to harm you and your child?   To be honest, we don't know the answer because every situation is different. However, we can help put your child and your family in the best possible position to handle all the stress.   The purpose of this podcast is simple: we are going to talk about the three things you can do to make sure that (above all else) your child and your family are ready to grow and to become better this school year.   What we cover:

  • Why grades are not the most important metric. You might not agree, and that's okay, but the world is shifting and there is something much more important that you can teach your child other than getting good grades.
  • The one thing that every child needs more of during the school year and how to get it.
  • How to help decrease stress and anxiety in your child without having a lengthy conversation about it (which they will probably not want to pay attention to).

#233 Peanut Allergies Cured

#233 Peanut Allergies Cured

Finally, Some good news today.   In Australia researchers have uncovered a technique to help people overcome peanut allergies to the point where they can tolerate peanuts, and peanut products, for up to four years!   More interestingly, the breakthrough came with use of probiotics.   Why is this interesting?   What the article doesn't mention is that prior to this time the rapid expansion of peanut allergies, and other food allergies, has been in some significant part, thought to be genetic in nature.   The underlying idea and one that we don't gloss over, is that by adding a requirement, in this case gut bacteria, there was a completely altered immunological response to a food. A food that in certain sad circumstances can be deadly.   Peanut allergies among children, which are now commonplace, seemed to hardly exist even a few decades ago.   How can that be? How can a problem that is "genetic", such as peanut allergies have been claimed to be, grow exponentially over the last 20 to 30 years.   We're not trying to be cynical, in fact we're thrilled at how many lives this will save. However, we can't ignore the facts and miss the bigger picture.   The purpose of this episode is to celebrate a wonderful life-saving achievement and help you understand how you can take the same knowledge and make your life even better.   What we covered:

  • How your immune system works and why that's important.
  • How potential food allergies develop in the first place.
  • What you can do to create a bulletproof immune system.
  • Why probiotics (and other similar action steps) are much bigger than only a cure for peanut allergies.

#232 Why Your Diet is Failing

#232 Why Your Diet is Failing

Are you in a rough spot?   You've been working hard, going to the gym, eating well, yet things just don't seem to be progressing?   Worse, maybe they've gone in the wrong direction and you're noticing that your scale is creeping up and the clothes are starting to fit tighter?   How can this be? What gives? Most importantly, what should you do about it?   The purpose of this episode is to give you a dietary check-in when everything seems to be going in the wrong direction.    What we covered:

  • Give your head a shake. Most often, and in our experience, your diet falls apart not because of a lack of information but a weak mental game. You're under more stress, you're more social and that means there is more chance you'll get off track. Whatever the reason, always start with what is happening between your ears.
  • Are you doing the right things? It's possible that sometimes you've picked a strategy that does not give you the results that you were hoping for. That's OK, it happens to everyone, but how do you know it's the wrong strategy vs. you just haven't done it long enough? We'll answer that.
  • Have you done it long enough? We all know that diet and exercise work, but it's impossible to think you'd lose 50 pounds after only changing your diet for a month. Things always take longer than we think. Here is a great way to know when you haven't done things long enough.
  • Are you guessing vs. testing? Quick...what did you eat last week on the same day? Do you remember? Of course you don't, nobody does. If you do remember, you have no idea what your portions were. The point here is to start documenting everything you eat and drink...this way there is no fooling yourself.

#231 Why Am I Not Getting Better?
2017-10-12 14:12:28 UTC 16:48
#231 Why Am I Not Getting Better?

This was an interesting week.   On more than one occasion, I was asked the same question many different ways...   1) Why isn't this getting any better? 2) How long until I start to feel better? 3) Is chiropractic working because I don't feel better? 4) Should I keep coming to see you because I don't feel any better? 5) What else do I need to do so I can feel better? 6) I was feeling better, and now I'm back to the beginning, how can I feel better?   These are very honest and legitimate questions.   I understand that you're not feeling well or that you might be injured. However, the healing process and ultimately fixing the problem follows a certain, very specific path, with all the parts laid out in a way that your body can't afford skip over a certain section.   Your body can heal quickly, but it must follow a certain order.   On today's podcast, I cover how you can best help your body recover fully and completely from sickness or injury.    What we covered:

  • Could it be that we are looking at the human body in reverse when it comes to fixing problems? Is there another way that we could be looking at it? We think there is. Learn what that way is, how it applies to you, and what you can do about it.
  • Why, in health, one thing is rarely ever the cause of your problem. I wish it were that simple, but it's not. Your health, injury, disease, symptoms are more often than not caused by many different factors, ALL of which you need to solve if you're going to be successful in getting better.
  • How to look at an injury properly and how to start the process, so that when you fix the problem, you have the best chance of never having that problem again.

#230 How to Handle a Bad Day

#230 How to Handle a Bad Day

Despite what you may think, everyone experiences bad days.   Everyone gets tired, everyone questions themselves, everyone has moments of feeling inadequate, everyone has dark moments when they fear the worst, everyone feels like life is unfair, and everyone has days when they would swear there is someone out to get them because everything has just...gone...wrong.   I know you've met or know people who never seem to have a bad day or worse, you actually believe that nothing bad has ever happened to them or that they're somehow just lucky enough to avoid all the BS everyone else seems destined to endure.   If you are ever going to live an extraordinary life, you're going to have to learn how to deal with bad days. Because despite what you may believe, the more success you have, the more challenging situations tend to come your way.   On this podcast, we'll cover our strategies and tips for handling things when they don't go as planned.   What we covered:

  • What makes it a bad day? Do you think that your bad day could be someone else's good day? I'm not trying to be disrespectful, but fundamentally you have only one choice, and that choice is how you respond to any given situation. It's your decision whether something is bad, or whether something is leverage for growth. How can you make that a much easier choice?
  • How to gain perspective. Have you ever had something you perceived as bad happen, only to have something even worse happen close after? Isn't funny how your focus switched from the bad thing to the worse thing? Perspective works in many ways.
  • The power of training. Your mind and decision making is a habit, and like any other habit, it will take work to change. Are you busy doing the work? Do you know what work you need to do?

#229 Your Most Important Asset: Mindset

The feedback from Think By Design has been amazing.   Here are some of the latest comments:   "I LOVE this Think By Design manual; it's just brilliant. So many people's lives pass by without them ever truly experiencing life to the fullest, you know? I don't want that for myself. I want to lay on my deathbed with no regrets, knowing that I lived my life as best I could for myself and others!"   "Honestly, it [The Think By Design Process] has been something I have just skipped in the past. It's apparently very different now that I have a daughter.. wow. This [The Legacy Branch] really moved me as no other branch has. I've spent years trying to figure out my purpose, and today was the day I found it, working through the legacy branch, crying like a baby on my front porch haha...Thank you for all the time and effort that has gone into developing Think By Design."   On this episode, we cover an overview of Think By Design. What is Think By Design, why it's been life changing for our community and how you can apply it to your life.   Here is what we cover:

  • The most important mental requirement and why you absolutely need to know (and do) this or you will be living someone else's life.
  • The most common mental hang-ups that you need to conquer or Think By Design will not work for you and, most importantly, you will not live an extraordinary life.
  • The steps and a general overview of Think By Design and why we feel it's different than other 'self-help' methodologies.
  • How to start applying this to your children and family.

#228 What The Health Is Up With That?

There's a new documentary that's gaining a lot of traction and has a lot of people talking. It's called What The Health.   It's a good piece of film making, and it touches on a lot of really important topics like food, the pharmaceutical industry, politics and the large farming industry.    But, are the claims made in this movie true?   Since it would be extremely challenging to try to cover all aspects of the film in a thirty-minute podcast, we focus our attention specifically on the food argument.   There are some good sound arguments made in this movie, and there is a lot of compelling information to consider. On the other side, there are some down right lies passed as unquestionable truths.   The goal of the Life By Design Podcast today, is to give you our breakdown and some counter arguments to stimulate your brain and get you thinking.   Let us know what you think.   What we covered:

  • Nutritional requirements vs. strategies. It's important to know what your body needs and give it that.
  • The cause of diabetes and how not be fooled into thinking it's anything but this. The best way to change is not the vegan version of's this.
  • How the pesky straw man keeps coming up...we really need to kill that guy for good.
  • Know your research - it's very easy to be tricked on the validity of 'science' if you don't understand how the study was conducted and what the flaws are of that particular type of study.
  • Our recommendations for nutrition.

#227 Chiropractic is BS?
2017-10-12 14:12:28 UTC 19:11
#227 Chiropractic is BS?

Here we go again...   Not surprisingly, another raunchy, illogical attack has been launched against chiropractic.   All the older arguments are here and to be honest, some of them are absolutely true.    We only call them like we see them and we won't pretend for one second that some of the allegations and claims made aren't true, they are. But, just because one thing is true does not translate into all else being true.   Our concern is simple...   We are not bothered by what other's think, (thankfully we live in a free country and other people's opinions are none of our business) but somewhere out there is a person who is going to wake up tomorrow morning and call the chiropractor for their first appointment. We definitely don't want the falsehoods propagated to change their mind and shortchange them on the positive impact properly applied chiropractic could potentially have on their life.   That breaks our hearts.   We want to present a rational, scientific, view of chiropractic for you to consider. Whether you agree with that viewpoint or not, or want the product or not, is entirely your choice...we simply hope it's a choice based on data, logic and objectivity.   What we covered:

  • How to not fall victim to a logical fallacy (A logical fallacy is a flaw in reasoning that renders an argument invalid.) We are living in a world where information is a commodity (log onto PubMed and you have access to the same studies as your doctor) but trust is at a premium. Someone is always trying to pull a fast one on you. Learn how to spot a fraud (no matter who) in their tracks. If you can get this lesson, your life will be vastly improved.
  • Why most (there are some legit ones) attacks on chiropractic are logical fallacies and the get the chiropractic side to the story.
  • How to pick a good chiropractor vs. when you should run away fast and never come back.

#226 Six Months of Exclusive Breastfeeding Now Harmful?

If it is wasn't already difficult enough to be a mom...things just got trickier. Especially if ensuring your child is properly nourished is one of your goals.   Food to a growing child is keystone requirement. What do we mean by "keystone"? If you want to build a quality house you would only use the best materials, to build an optimally healthy child you would require the best quality materials as well, which in this example, means the highest quality fuel.    In 2001 the World Health Organization published a study claiming that the minimum age a mother should even consider weaning a child off breast milk (provided you could breastfeed) was 6 months of age.   However, recent data has challenged that claim and caused a boat-load of confusion for a lot of caring moms and dads.   Our goal for this episode is to help pierce the veil and get to the heart of the issue. It's to help you know if 'research' like this is load of garbage or has some validity.   We want to do our best to help you decide what to do.    What we covered:

  • Learn to separate the strategy from the requirement The requirement is not to breastfeed your child. The requirement is to supply your child with adequate nutrition. Breastfeeding just happens to be the best strategy.
  • Does breast milk have enough 'nutrients' to support a child exclusively to 6 months and beyond, or should you start to supplement sooner?
  • Peanuts and Gluten as introductory foods? Is it ever a good idea to give those to your kids, and what is the impact if you choose to?
  • Is this 'evidence' legit or could there be ulterior motives at play? Many of the researchers are being accused of working for formula manufacturers. Who can you trust and how do you know?

#225 Why Money Is Necessary For An Extraordinary Life And How To Make It

Today we welcome to the Life By Design Podcast a special guest - Preston Pysh.   It might seem odd that we are talking about investing on a health and wellness podcast but, as we've argued before, money and financial freedom are an essential part of your life if you want to have an extraordinary life.    Investing is a great way to earn money passively, and we might as well learn how to invest from an expert.   Preston is a graduate of West Point. He is the international best-selling author of Warren Buffett's Three Favourite Books, and he has written three other books on investing and leadership. Preston is the co-host of The Investors Podcast and the owner of Pylon Holding Company. He enjoys spending time with his lovely wife Demi and their four children.    What we covered:

  • Money is important to living an extraordinary life; it's not everything, but almost every aspect of life gets easier with cash. Learn how to leverage investing (at least in it's simplest form) and start to build another income source.
  • The difference between price and value and why you should care. This simple idea could transform the way you spend your current money.
  • The most important thing you need to do in life. Preston has spent years studying billionaires, learn the one thing they have in common and how all of them have created their wealth. Hint: this has nothing to do with money.
  • An easy, simple and practical way to start investing, even if you have no knowledge or idea of where to begin.

#224 You're Not a Slave to Your Genes

On this episode, I welcome personal friend, exceptional human being, outstanding doctor, and a man on a mission Dr. Noah Dekoyer.   Dr. Noah is in his 16th year of private practice in Bayonne, New Jersey, where he is busy helping his patients achieve health and wellness through chiropractic care.   In 2014, after attending a Tom O'Bryan work shop, Dr. Noah and his partners formed Beyond Your Wildest Genes; a Chiropractic think-tank dedicated to teaching people how to live an innately healthy life by helping bridge the gap between the Chiropractic lifestyle, the public, and the holistic wellness community.   In 2015 Beyond Your Wildest Genes released The Pain Relief Project: Natural Solutions That Actually Work. A product that has already helped countless people find the help they were seeking.   It was a real pleasure having Dr. Noah on the Life By Design Podcast.   Here's What We Covered:

  • How Dr. Noah's health challenges in early life paved the way to where he is now. It's amazing how a chance conversation that inspires action is all it can take to completely change your life.
  • The science of epigenetics. 'Epi' literally means 'above'; making epigenetics mean 'above' your genes. When Ph.D. Bruce Lipton published his landmark book "The Biology Of Belief," claiming that gene expression is a matter of environment, he was declared a heretic and banished from mainstream medicine. As it turns out, he was right, and epigenetics is now at the forefront of medical research. Find out what epigenetics means to you and why you are in control of your health.
  • What bees, especially the queen bee, has to do with epigenetic expression.
  • A remarkable story of how Dr. Noah's dad recovered from a paralyzing spinal cord injury.

#223 Cutting The Fat On The Ketogenic Diet

You really can't ignore it any longer.   If you've been paying any attention at all to the fitness and nutrition world, you will have likely heard the term 'keto' or Ketogenic Diet.   Seemingly overnight there is a whole new buzz word in nutrition and many companies, celebrities and products are jumping on the 'keto' bandwagon.    But... What is the Ketogenic Diet? Should you do it? How is it different from other diets and products on the market? Is it safe? Can it shortcut my results?   These are the fun and interesting questions that you need to answer before you can make a full decision on what you should do.   Every time we hear of such a massive trend that is spreading quickly, the contrarian inside of us wonders what's going on and it's legit or just hype. The whole thing reminds us of Mark Twain's' quote: "Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect."   So we did...   What we covered:

  • Physiology 101. What is a ketone, how does your body make them, are they good for you, and what the fuss is all about?
  • The absolutely most important factor in determining if 'keto' is something that you should try? HINT: It has nothing to do with food.
  • Is 'Keto' something new, or has this idea been around for some time and is just experiencing a new windfall?
  • What we already know about ketosis and how it affects your body.
  • Is 'keto' different from Eat By Design? If so, how?
  • What about 'keto' supplements...are they helpful?
  • Strategies for achieving a ketogenic state.
  • Is this a good plan for a lifetime?

#222 If I Could Raise My Child Again

#222 If I Could Raise My Child Again

I read an interesting article this week that I think is a worthy topic of conversation. This conversation we're going to have is one I would love to have with every single parent I know.   It involves guilt as a parent.   Ayn Rand said, and I completely agree, that "The worst guilt to accept is the unearned."   Well, mom and dad - that quote applies directly to you in the sense that you have accepted a bunch of BS guilt from various sources.   The solution to this guilt is (and this is going to get me into all sorts of hot water) to parent your children like running a business.   Read that again if you need to, but let me explain.   The problem facing most parents, at the deepest level, is a lack of purpose and a vision for what you're trying to create. I recognize that can sound harsh (although it's not meant too), but I hope it gets you thinking.   As a parent or as a family, when you have a plan and goals you have targets. If you have targets than you have objectives (action steps) to be focused on and working towards. If you can do this (which is exactly what a business does), the guilt will drop away.    Don't get me wrong, the article is excellent (and I loved the 10 things), but I don't like the underlying theme which is "here is what I wish I did (raising my children) if I could do it again."   What we cover:

  • Why running your family like a business is a good idea
  • How to systematically begin to remove guilt as a parent

#221 The One Mindset You Need to Change Your Life

#221 The One Mindset You Need to Change Your Life

It's been a tough week.   The theme of the last week (at least in my life) has been...people around me being frustrated at failure and feeling let down.   Frustrated that:   "I'm not 50 pounds lighter." "My doctor forced me to do/have...." "I couldn't work out because my ______ was sore." "My kids were unruly." "My anxiety was high."   I get it.   I've had similar variations of those things happen to me in the past, so I know exactly what you feel like.   I also know that: 1) You need to shift your mindset first and foremost and 2) You are a lot closer to the things that you want than you ever could have imagined   But, I'm not going to lie to you, in order for you to bridge that gap between you now and you successful in the future, is going to be challenging because you will need to change one fundamental mindset.   I've spent a lot of time observing people, and I've really become fascinated with what creates success vs. what keeps people from success, and I can honestly say that this one mindset is the pivotal key.   What we cover:

  • The one mindset that every successful person has, that you will absolutely need to adapt and build success.
  • The most important person you need to be applying this mindset towards and how to leverage it to it's maximum.
  • Why self-discovery is not some weird esoteric journey, it's doing the hard work and really getting to know yourself and your deepest and truest desires.
  • How to accept failure in a way that doesn't harm your self-esteem, instead it makes you a better person.
  • How to cultivate this behaviour at home so that your children can experience the same thing.

#219 Before Doing Anything Else, Start Here

I could never:   -Train like you  -Eat the way the way you do -Have a morning power hour  -Complete my goals every 90 days   And on and on.   I hear this all the time. My response? "You are looking at the total of all my work over the last 7 years."   Heck, 7 years ago I would have never thought I would be here either.   You can do it if you're willing to do the work, be patient and love the process along the way.   But where do you start?   I won't pretend that there aren't many steps to Living By Design. There are, and it can be complicated.   That's why the focus of this episode is to help you dial in on the fundamentals of what you should start doing if you're confused on where and what to start with.   I've based my suggestions on the items that will make the most immediate impact on your life while taking the least amount of your effort. In other words - easy for you to do while giving you the most bang for your buck.   Things we covered:

  • Get checked already. I mean seriously what are you waiting for? No, this one is not #1 because I'm biased. Don't get me wrong I am biased, but nothing is more powerful with less effort than a scientifically applied force resulting in a chiropractic correction.
  • The most important 5 minutes that you will spend every day and how this meager 5 minutes will help literally slow down your next day, giving you more time.
  • The one meal you need to change first and the 3 things you should add to this meal.
  • The type of exercise you should add to your life that will change your current results in the gym for the better.

#218 Are Natural Products Better Products?

There is a big push away from big pharma but is the move towards "natural remedies" any better as a method of creating health?

One visit to the grocery or health food store and you'll see 1000's of products with the label "natural". Marketers know that savvy, health conscious shoppers are on the look out for this endorsement and they've leveraged this to the max!

The question still natural any better?

What we covered:

  • When is the right time for medical care?
  • The dangerous side effects of natural remedies.
  • Alternate approaches to getting and staying well.

#217 7 Signs You Need to Eat More Fat

Old habits die hard right?   I still find it shocking that despite the current and steady stream of consistent scientific evidence you are still scared to make fat a major part of your diet.   But on the other hand, I get it.   I mean, after all, fat has been vilified for so many years, by so many people that you respect (your teachers and your doctors) that it's hard to go against the low fat mantra.   I remember being in public school and our Phys Ed teacher brought in this disgusting yellow lumpy jelly and said: "This is hardened body fat. You will get this in your arteries and on the sides of your body from eating too much fat."    Talk about leaving a mark...that was almost 30 years ago and I still remember that event. So it's no wonder that most of us are completely fat phobic.   But, science (good science, and a lot of it) is proving time and time again that fat is NOT an enemy of health. On the contrary, fat is looking more like your health's best friend.   I'm not advocating eating as much fat as you want; especially the unhealthy kinds. But, I am saying that there is much more harm done to your body from avoiding fat, then there ever could be from including good fats in your diet.   I don't mean this to be a jerk, but the reality is your body requires fat. If you don't get it, there will consequences...potentially major ones.    On today's podcast, we cover the 7 Signs You Need To Add More Fat To Your Diet   What we cover

  • The science behind why you need to eat fat.
  • The seven signs (not diseases) that you are not eating enough fat.
  • The different kinds of fat, which ones to eat and which ones to avoid. HINT - DO NOT avoid saturated fat.

#216 Becoming The Best Jadzia Truszkowski

Do you really want to be the best at something?   I can't comment for you, but in my life, I always dreamed of becoming a professional athlete. I always loved sports, and when I was younger, I loved the fame and attention that athletes got...the pay cheques didn't seem too bad either.   But, I had no idea what it really took to get there.   I had no idea how much time, dedication, effort, pain and work it took to be the best at something.   Our guest on this week's Life By Design Podcast is a good friend of ours, Jadzia Truszkowski. I don't say this lightly; if you haven't heard that name before and you follow CrossFit, you'll soon know it well.   This is Jadzia's first year qualifying and competing as a CrossFit regional athlete, which is the one step before making it to the CrossFit Games. The winner of the CrossFit Games is dubbed the 'fittest on earth.'   Why should you care?   You should care because Jadzia has committed herself to becoming a master of her craft and the same principles that she uses (and has used) you can too; even if you don't want to be a CrossFit athlete.   Principles are true across the board, whether you want to be the fittest on earth, the richest on earth, or anything in between.    Here is what we cover:

  • The absolute secret of mastering anything is making your mind up that you want it. Not 'kinda' knowing, but wanting it so badly that your physiology changes because you have made a decision.
  • Why loving the process (the act of doing something) is a better predictor of success than the results you are going to get.
  • How to deal with setbacks, heartbreak, and pain.
  • Why being self-aware is a vital skill in your planning process.

#215 Is Cancer Genetic?

#215 Is Cancer Genetic?

Horrible journalism strikes again with Global New's post:   "Reality check: Is cancer a disease that strikes at random?"   The article stinks because it's a misleading mess of context dropping and oversimplification of not only cancer, but of human physiology as well.   The article states that gene duplicating errors are responsible for cancer. Every time one of your body's cells need to grow and be replaced the body has to duplicate one of your existing cells. Sometimes there are mistakes or mutations when this cell copying takes place, and the study claims that those mistakes are responsible for the vast majority of those cancers.   Unfortunately, there are just a few (sarcastic) details left out of the equation.   Does the health of the cellular environment have an impact on the quality of replication?   Does the body have any mechanism (immune system, RNA molecules) of correcting those replication errors?   Does the quality of raw building material have anything to do what kind of cells you have?   What about all the data that states that cancer's have different genetic profiles?   I'm not suggesting for one second that cancer does not have a genetic component to it, I'm just saying this is article is bad, misleading and can direct you toward a hopeless victim mentality in no time flat.   Many good, strong and healthy people are diagnosed with cancer, while others who live unhealthy lives are not. The job of science is to find out why this is happening.    What we cover:

  • The physiology of cancer and why genes can or can't play a varying role.
  • Your genes are the loaded gun, but your lifestyle pulls the trigger - what you can do about cancer.
  • Why having the "I can't do anything about it" attitude is a dangerous attitude to have, even if (in all reality) you can't do anything about it.

#214 8 Things The Happiest Couples Do

Relationship stress or hardship ranks as the #1 form of stress that you are probably experiencing. The problem with relationship stress is that it hardly ever happens overnight. It's usually months or years of neglect, unhappiness, and other forms of stress that cause problems.   Your values in life are rarely destinations, they are a journey.   Happiness is an example.   No matter how happy (or unhappy) you are today, it WILL change tomorrow, in a week and even in a year. So if you want to be happy, you always have to give it some attention.   Relationships are much the same.   If you value your marriage, friendships, and kids, it should make sense that you would use your time to grow these relationships.   Unfortunately, this can be very difficult.   We have 2 kids, 4 businesses, I'm gone all day and don't get home until 7pm at night. This sometimes makes it feel like my wife is my roommate and not my life partner.   Trust me when I tell you that I get it.   But, since I value my wife and our marriage, I make sure that I give it some attention so it can continue to grow.   I came across this article in the Huffington Post about the 8 Things The Happiest Couples Do, and I thought it was worth a share and a conversation.   What we covered:

  • What you do is NOT important. The devil is NOT in the details. The important thing is that you do something.
  • Planning is the key. Stop wishing for things to change and start following a system to get results.
  • Stop comparing your relationship to others. It's ok to use others as motivation for what you are trying to create, but don't obsess about how 'things should be' especially in the age of social media.
  • Treat your relationship like a business deal. I know that might sound harsh but the reality is, asking the question 'what's in this for me' is the key for a long term and happy relationship.

#213 Is Minimalism By Design?

#213 Is Minimalism By Design?

I love 'retail therapy' as much as the next person... but would having less stuff make us happier?

Is there anything wrong with buying stuff for yourself if you want it?

Is commercialism something that we need to fear?

Does minimalism have anything to do with Life By Design?

Minimalism - A Documentary About Important Things is tearing up right now.

Countless number of people have told me about the movie, told me I should watch it, and said that the documentary reminded them of me. I took that as a compliment... at least I hope it was meant that way!

When I asked them what they thought or liked about the movie, they told me that they liked the idea of having fewer things, wanted to be happier and saw minimalism as a way to achieve that happiness. However, they found the idea of getting rid of things challenging and were not sure they could really do it.

Here Is What We Covered

  • Your values should be the most important thing in your life and your life objectively should be your #1 value.
  • Don't listen to anyone else. There is always someone, in every movement who is waiting to fill your brain with what they want you to think or feel. Do not get drawn into that trap.
  • Minimalism might or might not make you happy; it depends on your values.
  • Minimalism is not a complete ideology, so it's not a 'my way or the highway' approach.
  • Where does happiness come from and how do you find it?

Thank you for joining the Drive to ONE MILLION People Worldwide Living Life By Design.

#212 BEST OF: The Case Against Grains

#212 BEST OF: The Case Against Grains

Sometimes you launch an episode that either connects with a lot of people or repels just as many. The result is a show that goes viral.

That was this show for The Life By Design Podcast.

There are few components of the Life By Design lifestyle that hold people back as much as removing "grains". For many they've grown up on whole wheat bread and cereal. These staples are tough to let go of emotionally and let's be honest, they can taste pretty darn good as well!

Regardless, the argument rages on… many still claim that grains are harmful, cause inflammation, gut irritation and should not be consumed at all. But wait, says the other side… there are many cultures who eat predominately grains and they are healthy and live long lives. Who can we trust? Who is right?

What We Covered:
  • The great grain debate - the interest is full of dialectally opposed opinions on grains… they both can’t be right. Which one do you trust?
  • The main point is not adaptability… it is nutrient density.
  • The hierarchy principle applied to food.
  • What you should choose to eat and why.

#211 9 Challenges You Should Try & Conquer

#211 9 Challenges You Should Try & Conquer

Do you love a challenge?   There is something really interesting that happens when you get challenged...   People tend to respond in two very different ways. Either they hate it and want nothing to do with the challenge or they embrace it as a fun game.   Knowing which one of those two you are, will make a big difference when you listen to this podcast.   If you don't like challenges, then this podcast will not be for you. You should still listen, just don't take the challenge.   But, if you're up to the task, then I know you will absolutely love this episode.   There is a psychology that works very well when it comes to a challenge. When you view the challenge as a fun game, it turns into a competition against yourself instead of an overwhelming and extra stress in your life.   Interestingly enough, this is the exact attitude that the most successful people have in their respective areas of mastery.   Paul Tudor Jones, an investor who has beat the market by at least 30% in his last 30 years of investing, says that making the right investments is "like a game to him, he wants to win." The money stopped mattering a long time ago, he loves the challenge.    Michael Jordon, on basketball said "Don't stop if you hit a wall, figure out how to get around it." Michael loved the challenge of basketball, the winning was the icing on the top of the cake.   I'm hoping that by challenging you, we will help you learn to adopt a winning attitude and build some momentum in the process.   What we covered:

  • Wake up every morning at 5am for 2 weeks.
  • Read a book on something you struggle with.
  • Spend 10 minutes doing mobility work before you leave work.
  • Add an extra 5-10 pounds to the 'normal' weight you lift.
  • Cook 1 recipe every day for 7 days.
  • See a Structural chiropractor every day for 2 weeks.
  • Try to make everyone you communicate with smile.
  • Lay down and get up 10x every day (seriously try it).
  • Eat protein with every meal.

#210 Bob Harper's Heart Attack...What's the Point to Health?

#210 Bob Harper's Heart Attack...What's the Point to Health?

In case you haven't heard Bob Harper of The Biggest Loser fame, suffered a heart attack earlier this week.   First of all, Bob, if there is some slim chance that you are reading this...Life By Design are fans and we wish you the best! We're all glad that you're doing well and hope for your speedy recovery.   Unfortunately, this whole incident has left a bad taste in many people's mouths.   "How did this happen, wasn't he supposed to be healthy?"   "If he [Bob Harper] did everything right and still had a heart attack; what chance do I have to find health?"   And my personal favorite...   "I told you there was no point to working out and eating right; it's all up to random chance anyway..."   Is there any validity to these claims? Should you just give up on pursuing health?    What we cover:

  • Why it all comes down to mindset and beliefs. I can't make you use your mind, but I can help ask you the right questions. Trust me, there are some days like I feel I'm on borrowed time, which makes diet and exercise all the more important.
  • Never make assumptions based on the news. Knowing what we do about the human body and health, it's unfair to judge why Bob Harper had a heart attack. You don't know his history, state of health or what he did to pursue his health. Go by facts, not stories.
  • What you should do moving forward. There are valuable lessons to learn from something that shakes a belief down to the core. Remember the primary tenant of Life By Design is that reality exists...wishing, hoping and praying doesn't change that fact.

#209 One Powerful Tool That Will Change Your Life

#209 One Powerful Tool That Will Change Your Life

The problem with common sense is that it's not so common. This may be an old cliche, but that doesn't make it any less true.   Common sense is most often referenced when you talk about another person, usually referring to a mistake that you know they shouldn't have made.   "He cut right in front of me like I wasn't even there. How could he do that? Doesn't he have any common sense?"   At a deeper level - common sense is a powerful tool you can use to transform your life.   The lesser used code word for common sense is logic.   Logic is important because it helps you understand the world in a non contradictory way. It also helps you understand how your brain works and that's the key!   Your brain has a certain way of learning and being programmed.   One of the reasons you can't excel and get to the next level of your life is because you are using the programming of your brain in the wrong way.   Suppose you logged onto your computer and you tried to write an essay on your movie editor program. How would that work?   The answer is - it wouldn't.   Your movie editor program is designed to edit movies and trying to give it instructions on how to write an essay would be illogical.    So the real question is - are you giving your brain logical commands? Ones that you can use to make your life awesome and successful.   What we cover:

  • How your brain processes information and how we live in a world where you are taught in a confused and disorganized way.
  • Dilt's Logical levels - How your brain identifies your belief systems, how those systems control your life and create your perceived limits.
  • How to rework those logical levels to create the life you want.

#208 How to Prepare For Big Events

Qualifying for the CrossFit open is in full effect and there are many life lessons you can learn from the athletes and their preparation.    Why do some of them crash and burn? How are some of them so successful? How can the same 5 always be at the top? Why do some handle stress better than others?   The point of this podcast is not to get you ready for the CrossFit Games, but to prepare you well for the big events in your life.   Have you ever:   -Had a huge job interview? -Competed at a high level in anything? -Had to have a difficult conversation with someone? -Faced difficult challenges in life? -Raised kids? -Wanted to pursue mastery in some area?   If the answer is yes to any of these, then this podcast will be very important to you.   Personally, I've always found it interesting that some people always seem to choke, while others thrive under the pressure.   What we cover:

  • Why your story holds the secret - 80% of success in high-pressure situations (or self-made high-pressure situations) can be based on what is happening between your ears. The most successful have their mental game figured out. We'll tell you how you can create a unbeatable belief system.
  • "Practice does not make perfect; it makes permanent" Do you have the skill set to achieve what you say you want to accomplish? If not, you'd better get those skills and make them automatic.
  • The one thing that the most successful and best-performing people fear the most.
  • Is it better to focus on your results or the process? The answer to this one might surprise you.
  • The path to success is not a straight line - we'll tell you how to best deal with the disappointment.

#207 3 Signs Your Hormones Are Outta Whack
2017-10-12 14:12:28 UTC 19:45
#207 3 Signs Your Hormones Are Outta Whack

Your life is run by your hormones.   Literally, everything you do you, every single day, is intimately connected to the expression of your hormones.   Hormones: -Help you lose weight; help you gain weight -Help you calm down; keep you feeling stressed -Help you sleep; keep you awake -Help your immune system; suppress your immune system -Help you heal; keep you sick   It's really that simple.   The problem is your hormones are not easy to change, in fact they change slowly... very slowly. This means changing your hormone profile takes a long time.   This means if you fail to recognize the early signs of hormone problems, you're reducing your chances of getting everything on track and ever having normal hormone expression again.

Worse, since early hormone change doesn't necessarily cause any particular disease, you ignore those signs as a signal to take action.

I'm here to tell you: don't do that anymore.   If you recognize ANY of these hormone changes act right away. Your future self will thank you.   What we covered:
  • Understanding your hormones - How does this complicated mesh of chemicals combine to run your life and why you need to know that your hormones are a complex society of interconnected parts.
  • Low energy - One of the most basic signs of a hormone problem is not having energy, even though there is no reason why you shouldn't have energy.
  • Poor Moods - I'm happy to tell you that your sad, angry, stressed, etc., moods are not all your fault. Your hormones have a big role to play in how you feel and how you perform. But what do you if you're not happy with your moods? How can you catch this problem and fix it?
  • Unexplained weight gain - You eat OK, you go to gym, so how is it you're gaining weight? The biggest challenge you're facing with weight loss is your hormone profile.

#206 5 Biggest By Design Mistakes

#206 5 Biggest By Design Mistakes

Have you ever tried to make a change and failed miserably?   Me too...   There is nothing easy or fun about going through a change. The glory comes at the end after the change has been made.   An interviewer once asked legendary musician Billy Joel, "What is the hardest thing you have to do every day?"    "Write music." Answered Joel.   There was a long awkward pause.   The interviewer was probably thinking "This is Billy Joel, how can writing music be so hard?"   Anticipating the question, Billy Joel spoke up again saying "Yes, writing music sucks; having written music is the best emotion I've ever felt."   Translation...doing the work sucks; the results of the work are awesome!   We all get side tracked some of the time, we lose focus, miss a step, or get stressed. That's a normal part of improvement.   What's even more challenging is when you are not sure why you're not getting the results you think you should be getting from the work that you are doing.   That's why today's podcast is about the 5 biggest mistakes you might be making while transitioning into living your Life By Design.    The purpose of the podcast is to help shed some light on common mistakes people make (ourselves included) that are preventing you from getting the results that you want.   What we covered:

  • The 'you' factor. If you don't get your mind right, you will never get the results that you want. Learn the biggest mindset mistakes you must fix to get what you want.
  • The most ignored part of your body that, despite everything we've ever said on this podcast, you're still probably not doing. And YES, it really is holding you back.
  • The 2 biggest training mistakes that are keeping you from creating a lean, strong and fit body.
  • One simple tweak that would transform your nutrition.

#205 All About #bellletstalk And Mental Health

#205 All About #bellletstalk And Mental Health

January 25th was a huge day for mental health.   It was a day where people were supposed to open up and discuss their mental health challenges, or mental health in general.   The hashtag for the day, if you don't live in Canada, was #bellletstalk.   As I read others experiences online, I found myself sucked into an infinite vortex filled with every possible emotion - happiness, sorrow, horror, empathy and more. I felt comforted to know that I wasn't alone in feeling the way that I sometimes do.   In fact, I felt like part of the majority... for once.   But today as I catch my breath, take a small break from life and read the news (AKA my Facebook feed), I can't help but feel empty.   Why empty?   Empty because nothing has changed. Empty because all of those powerful experiences and stories are STILL THERE today.   Don't get me wrong I think awareness campaigns are great, they bring focus and attention to a problem, and in this case, a serious one that needs to be solved.   They don't, however, solve the problem.   On today's show, we talk about how to end the problem of mental illness (or at least a place to begin that will make a difference).   What we cover:

  • The mind and human nature. Our teachings about the world, how we should act, what we should value, is contradictory to human nature. If your philosophy is not programmed correctly, how can you ever be successful?
  • There are only 2 inborn fears and everything else is learned. This makes the concept of modeling a powerful tool for mental disorders.
  • The one standard that you need to drop immediately. If you just did this one thing, it would dramatically change your life for the better.
  • Why Nathaniel Branden was right about who you could to turn to for help, and how to access that one person who can turn your life around.

#204 Wait, I Can Eat Hummus Now?
2017-10-12 14:12:28 UTC 16:08
#204 Wait, I Can Eat Hummus Now?

Here are 2 questions that are always asked at every single Eat By Design Seminar.   What makes it even more interesting is that we go out of our way to answer them and people still ask!   Question 1 - What about quinoa? Question 2 - What about hummus/chickpeas/lentils?   The answer up to now...   "You can eat whatever you would like, nobody is stopping you. Yet both quinoa (to a lesser extent) and legumes have both been shown to harm your gut (and therefore health) while giving nothing in return that you can't get from a safer, more nutrient dense food."   The person who asked the question usually looks sad as they feel as though they can never again have their hummus or quinoa.   Has recent data changed all this?   In an article posted by our friend and colleague Mark Sisson (author of the book Primal Blueprint), he thinks that legumes could be back on the menu.   But, Do we agree with him?   What we covered:

  • The purpose of nutrition and eating. Why loving the taste of food is only half the battle and why we can't forget the most important part of why you eat.
  • How the answer to this question is very easy to understand once you know the principles associated with nutrition. Never forget to think in principle, it is the most important cognitive function you can learn (providing your principles are correct).
  • Lectins, phytates, and the other reasons legumes were considered to be off track. Have these things changed or do the same rules apply?
  • Our answer to the question: should you be eating legumes and are they healthy for you?

#203 How to Transition Your Kitchen

#203 How to Transition Your Kitchen

"How can I start losing weight?" is a question we're regularly asked.   "Eat less and work out more" is the response we NEVER give because it's not true for the most part.    Yes, nutrition and exercise are very important but you already know that.   In our experience, there are 2 much bigger challenges holding you back from reaching the weight and body shape you want.   1) You have not established a long term focused.   There is nothing wrong with wanting to lose weight. The problem is you want that weight to melt off your body by tomorrow at 3 pm.   I'm sorry to say it doesn't happen that way, at least not if you want to keep the weight off. Instead of focusing on a short time frame, how about you expand that time frame to one year or two years? Now you'll notice that the pressure is off and you've given yourself time for step 2)   2) You're not focused on creating habits.    The reason you are carrying the weight is you've created habits in your life that support you at that weight. Want to be a different weight? Create different habits.   The challenge is that habits take time to form, energy to maintain, and focus to implement. All those things can be hard.   Let's get you started in the right direction.   On today's show, we are going to be talking about the kitchen habits you need to start adopting that can help you stick to your meal plan.   What we covered:

  • The power of scheduling - How creating a meal plan is as easy as putting it in your calendar.
  • What kitchen tools you need to be able to prepare healthy meals and not spend all of your time cooking.
  • 3 things that we can't live without in the kitchen.

#202 What We Learned From 2016

It takes a wise man to learn from his mistakes, but an even wiser one to learn from others.   -Zen Proverb   Don't be fooled; the same idea applies to success as well...   If you want to become successful, you should spend your time learning what other successful people do as well as learning from your own mistakes.   In some circles, the studying and duplication of successful behaviour is called modeling. Since you want to be successful, let us help you with a few things you we've found to be successful for us.    Believe it or not, 2016 is over and gone forever.    This may sound harsh, but really, the only way that 2016 could have truly been a bad year for you is if you didn't learn anything from what happened.   Don't get me wrong; I'm not saying that 2016 didn't have its hardships or disasters (it could have been the most challenging year of your life), but as long as you learned something from those challenges and applied the lessons to make your life better, you still made progress.   What we covered:

  • On this episode, Jamie and I review 2016 and share all the insights, tools, techniques, apps, movies, struggles and wins that happened for us. Our hope is that you can apply them to your life and make it even better.
  • We want to share what's worked, what hasn't worked, what you can try and what you should stay away from.

#201 How to Stop Your Parents From Feeding Your Child Junk

#201 How to Stop Your Parents From Feeding Your Child Junk

Do you have family or others watch your children? Do they do things that you would never do, feed your kids things you never would, or let them watch things that you don't think are appropriate?   Do you think you handle it successfully or could your approach use some work?   Do you ever have productive conversations with those people or do things usually get heated and out of control?   Here is what recently happened to me...   Last Friday Rachelle, Ari and I had a nice family day out on the town.   We went to Chapters (which could be called Indigo or something else where you're from) to look at some books, grab a coffee and let Ari play with some toys. It was fun.   When we finished piling into the car to start the journey home, Ari, from his back seat, said "Burger King" when we drove by the restaurant.   Rachelle and I exchanged concerned looks. "How does he know what that is?" Rachelle asked, knowing full well that neither of us has ever, or would ever consider taking him to that restaurant.   It didn't take us very long to figure that more than likely it was my parents who took him there. It was a big deal. To Rachelle and myself feeding our family good, nutritious, health enhancing food is a big value. We were both really upset.    "How could my parents do that?"   "Don't they know it's bad for him?"   Those were the thoughts that started swirling through my mind.   How did I handle it?   What we cover:

  • The most important thing you need to know before you enter into any type of conversation about what you don't like regarding someone's behaviour. If you miss this step you are screwed.
  • How to keep your cool, no matter how angry or pissed off you are.
  • How to diffuse the bomb and maintain a high level of self-esteem while still getting your point across clearly.
  • Yes, the 'bad' behaviour was unacceptable, but if you lose sight of this one thing, everything else will get much worse.

#200 3 Ways to Help Your Developmentally Delayed Child

#200 3 Ways to Help Your Developmentally Delayed Child

It's hard to believe but this episode 200! Thank you to everyone who has listened from the beginning and to all our new listeners as well.   Today we're talking about a very difficult situation for parents.   Nothing stings as much as the snide remarks of another parent (or family member) when they are speaking about your developmentally delayed child.   "What's wrong with him?"   "Why isn't she taking yet?"   "Shouldn't he be walking by now?"   I understand that these comments are with good and innocent intent (most of the time), but that doesn't mean that they don't leave you feeling like you are a complete failure and bad parent.   This week a good friend of mine told me about a little girl who was about a year old and still couldn't lift her head up. The parents, 2 wonderful and extremely loving people, were beside themselves in despair, fear, and frustration.    They didn't know what to do to help their little girl.   I've learned, from experience, that most parents of children who are (or could be) delayed have no idea what they can do to help their suffering child.   Noticing and diagnosing the delay is not the problem; finding a solution that helps your child get better is.    Most parents are left frustrated and without knowing just how they can help.    Let's change that.   What we cover:

  • The huge difference between being delayed and developing at your child's own pace. Every child is different; thankfully developmental milestones are given a range, not a specific time.
  • The 5 categories of childhood development.
  • The 3 general causes of the developmental problem.
  • A 4th category that could be contributing to the developmental delay. This category is overlooked by nearly all medical providers and practitioners, yet it is the system that controls and coordinates all behaviour and learning. I realize it sounds obvious and strange at the same time.
  • 3 steps you can take to ensure the 4th category is addressed and not adding to the problem.

#199 Does a Longer Labour = Fat Loss Later?

As we record, my wife Dr. Rachelle, is 5 days overdue. If you've ever listened to Life By Design, you know we don't like what that idea means as kids are born when they are ready.   It's not fun watching her move around in extreme pain (and only getting worse) while her body is slowly getting ready to deliver our 2nd child.   There is nothing fun about the back cramps, lack of sleep, shortness of breath, pain, swelling and lack of energy.   If you've ever given or been around birth, you know this already.   One thing you might not know is that the same hormones that cause you to hate life when you were getting ready to deliver are the very same ones that could ensure your baby has a healthy metabolism after they are born.   This is really important since every chronic disease that is killing us (cancer, diabetes, heart disease, autoimmune disorders) can be connected in some way to broken metabolism and it is in your best interest to help your child in any way you can.   The study found that stress hormones, produced only late in pregnancy and during labour, may also be responsible for helping your child metabolize fat, instead of sugar.   This is just one possible effect of interfering with a cascade of chemicals that are part of the normal birthing process.   What we cover:

  • The importance of fat metabolism and why you should care.
  • Don't rush it. Why natural deliveries (when possible) are better for both mom and baby. No, this is not a judgment on how you should have your child, but there are certain facts you should know.
  • Why natural is NOT (you read that right) always better. How can you tell if you should continue with a natural birth or have a more medically oriented one?

#198 Mess This Up and Life Gets Worse

Your brain is the most important part of your body.   Every thought, emotion, pleasure, pain, accomplishment and more is experienced in your brain.   Your brain controls your ability to pick up your children, do your job, train, eat, sleep, rest, watch TV, fight off an infection and everything else in between.   Your brain runs everything from your lungs, metabolism, hormones, circulation, breathing and beyond.   Your brain helps you learn, houses your consciousness, your personality, your potential and your abilities.   Let's play it safe and say your brain is important. Heck, those functions are just scratching the surface of the incredible organ known as your brain.   But, I find something very interesting...   Smart people get insurance on everything that is valuable to them. They understand that you can't predict the future, but you can protect your assets to make sure you don't lose them.   Your brain is your biggest asset...what are you doing to protect it?   If you are like most people, the answer is nothing.   I know I'm not being entirely fair since you've probably never been taught to take care of your brain. Research is starting to change that.   One of the best ways to protect your brain is chiropractic care but it has always been a bit of an enigma to most of the population.   I'm sure you know people that swear by it, maybe you've even heard of some amazing and unbelievable stories of people with serious health problems going to a chiropractor and finding success and relief even after seeing multiple medical providers.   As it turns out, we are starting to realize how chiropractic has been able to perform all these miracles... as it turns out chiropractic change the way your brain works.   What we covered:

  • How chiropractic care literally changes your brain function and helps your body.
  • The difference between chiropractic approaches and who you are looking for.
  • Who this approach to chiropractic is best for.

#197 Don't Fall Into 2017

As the year is starting to wind down, the internet is full of meme's proclaiming 2016 a disaster of a year.   My favorite is the following:   "Fidel Castro survived 857 attempted assassinations; he couldn't even survive 2016."   Very funny, but also very sad.   Of course, it's possible to have a year of hardship in which you experience loss, personal struggle, setbacks and even failure. However, I find it interesting that it's always the same people who experience the same failures, while the same people are getting more and more successful.   One huge reason why you are not finding the success you've been wishing for year after year is due to your lack of planning.   "Failing to prepare is preparing to fail." -Benjamin Franklin   I know you've heard and maybe even said that exact phrase before. If you are an athlete of any kind and you had a nickel for every time your coach said it, you would be rich...well, maybe not rich but you get the point.   If you know this is true then why aren't you busy preparing for success?

This year I challenge you to take some time and plan to make 2017 the best year that you've ever had.

The biggest challenge you face?   You're unsure how to plan because you've never been taught...we can help! How about an entire podcast on how we plan for success every year?   What we cover:
  • 4 simple letters that will help you know what to make a priority for your life in 2017.
  • How to know where you are going to be in 25 years.
  • A detailed action plan including what you need to do today in order to make that long term vision become a reality.
  • Personality traits that you must develop to become successful.

#196 Want to Be Smarter? Just Do This.

Every once in a while you find a piece of research that just makes you want to jump for joy - this was that study.   For years at Life By Design, we have been talking about the importance of strength training to every aspect of your life. Bottom line: it's a requirement for an optimal body.   In this University of Sydney study, researchers found that people from 55-85 years of age with mild cognitive dysfunction became smarter after 6 months of strength training.   But that is not it...they also found that the subjects who strength trained had a bigger and different looking brains! The researchers were excited for what this could mean to people with neurodegenerative disorders like dementia and Alzheimer's.   My favorite part of the study was that the subjects were put through a legitimate strength training program. That's quite rare in studies of this sort and it was wonderful to see for a change. The results speak for themselves.   What we covered:

  • Don't mess around with requirements. You can if you really want to, but you will only be hurting yourself.
  • How you develop strength, and why most people (especially women) are scared to strength train.
  • How to develop your own strength training program. What are the most basic things you should do to continue improving your strength.
  • The most common mistakes made when attempting to perform a strength training program. Make sure you avoid them.

#195 Is Breast Cancer Being Over Diagnosed?

A prestigious medical journal, The New England Journal Of Medicine, published a study claiming breast cancer is being over-diagnosed and the blame can be laid on mammograms.   The head researcher questioned the whole screening process saying that 'screening is a choice, not a public health imperative.'   His reasoning?   According to his data, Dr. Welch concluded that many tumors or lumps found in breast tissue would never transform into metastatic breast cancer.   He claims that tumor size is not as important as biological characteristics which imaging (mammograms included) can never show.   Of course, this opinion does not go uncontested.   Dr. Daniel Kopans argues that the data is flawed and mammograms are great screening tools. He mentions that breast cancer increased 1%/year from 1940 to 1980 and that screening is a life-saving procedure for most women.   We did find it interesting that Dr. Daniel Kopans receives research grant money from GE Medical, who also happens to make equipment for mammograms.   What we covered:

  • The research. Should this study change the way you look at mammograms?
  • Politics. How can you be sure that the information you're getting is accurate and what you're being told is in your best interest?
  • Creating health vs. treating disease. How the right health strategy not only helps your body fight off cancerous cells but all other diseases as well.
  • Why you need to look after yourself. It's OK to have a panel of experts that you consult but at the end of the day, the final decision must be yours.

#194 How To Erase Post Election Stress

The people have spoken and the US election is over.   However, a quick view of social media will tell you that the damage is just starting to happen now.   I don't mean that in a political way. I mean that in the most personal way possible.   People are losing their minds. There have been riots, hatred, families being torn apart by their differing political views, fear, panic attacks and even threats of moving to Canada.   You are stressing yourself out and ruining your life and health over something you can't control and can't change. Entering into the stress response of fight or flight is the precursor to disease, early death and an abundance of mental anguish.   To quote Bob Newhart from a classic Mad TV episode "Stop it!"   Stop doing this to yourself.    On this podcast, we discuss strategies to help snap you out of fear mode and get your head and body working properly again.   What we cover:

  • 3 simple things that you can do right away to snap your body out of that fear curdling, almost panic attack like feeling that you get when you believe the worst is yet to come.
  • The head vs. heart dichotomy. Yes it's true, both your head and your heart are necessary to live your best life but never let your emotions overrun your logical mind.
  • Plan for the worst, hope for the best. Is your life risk proof? I'm willing to bet that it's not.

#193 How to Fight Health Shaming

If you were ever guilted into feeling bad about the choices you've made, how you look, what your interests are or how you choose to live your life, then this podcast is for you.   As of late, shaming has been a hot topic all in the media on a worldwide scale.   Interestingly enough, when doing the research I couldn't find a solid definition on 'shaming' much less two people who used the term to mean the same thing.   We seem to have an idea of what 'shaming' means, but don't know specifically what exactly we're talking about. Not being able to define any problem is a huge challenge with finding a solution.   One of the areas you may not have considered as even possible for people to shame is when others are trying to make the right decisions. Believe it or not, there is such a thing as health shaming, which means shaming for wanting or trying to be healthy.   What we cover:

  • The definition of shaming. What it means to shame and be shamed and how there is power in knowing exactly what you are dealing with so you can fix it.
  • Why shaming really stems from these 2 concepts that we have covered in previous podcasts.
  • Practical action steps that you can take to reduce your response to shaming and those people who are trying to shame you.

#192 Your Holdiay Body Starts Now

Picture for a second what you will feel like on December 26th...   The day has just ended, you've been to at least 4 parties by now, ate tonnes of chocolates and sweets, been on your annual pub crawl and visited with friends and family.   Better still have at least four more alcohol and dessert filled parties to go before it's all over.   Yikes!   This is just about the time when you start to feel tired and ashamed of your behaviour over the last month. You know that you haven't done anything good to your body, you're scared to see the number on the scale and you just can't stop.   No wonder losing weight and joining the gym is the #1 most commonly set goal for the new year.   It doesn't have to be that way.   Is it possible for you to have your cake and eat it too?   Is it possible to go to your parties, have fun, drink, eat and be merry while not gaining all that weight and feeling bad about yourself?   That's what we cover on this week's podcast.   We want to help you understand and apply the vital steps to having fun this holiday season without derailing your health and physical appearance.   It's easier than you think.   What we covered:

  • It all starts with your mindset and what you want to accomplish. Learn why at least 50% of your success is how you view the holidays.
  • Learn a more powerful approach to will power. Make no mistake, will power is vital for success in your life, but to blame your desire for having another drink or eating another treat on it's lack is ridiculous. It will only hurt your self-esteem and make you feel bad about yourself.
  • How habits, schedule and accountability are the key to your success in any situation.
  • Learn which habits you need to have.
  • Learn what you need to do before you add something to your schedule.

#191 I Had No Idea Meat Was This Bad

It's not every day that we're shocked by what we read but today was that day. Every week, while putting together the information for the Life By Design Podcast, we do a lot of additional reading and learning.

We try to pick things that are current, exciting, and most importantly, beneficial to you.   This week we were floored by the article 7 Things That Happen When You Stop  Eating Meat.   Here is what we were told: 1) Meat causes diabetes. 2) Whole grains reduce your chances of diabetes. 3) If you stop eating meat, you will get the right amount and the right type of protein. Some pretty bold statements...   What we cover:
  • A step by step review of this article, covering all seven reasons, including our analysis of the good, bad and the ugly.
  • Why you need to beware of ALL nutritional research.
  • Why knowing basic human physiology is vital to understanding when someone is trying to pull-one-over on you.

#190 Are We Giving Our Kids Too Much?

Kim John Payne, a clinical psychologist, conducted a study where he simplified the lives of children with attention deficit disorder. After four months of this new, simplified life, he noticed that 68% of the kids went from being clinically dysfunctional to functional along with a 37% increase in cognitive aptitude.

Is this something you should be doing with your child?

What we cover:
  • How the concept of requirements and strategies applies to the least understood part of the human body - the mind.
  • What are the requirements for a child's mind to grow up healthy and strong?
  • Does this simple parenting strategy make sense?
  • Simple action steps that you can apply right now to help your child grow and develop into the person you want them to become.

#189 How To Fix Your Sciatica

Are you tired of dealing with that annoying (sometimes brutal) low back pain that can send numbness and tingling into your legs?   Are you tired of not being able to sleep, stand, sit, play with your kids, go to work or doing anything because it feels like you have a knife stabbing you in the back?   Are you sick of thinking you're finally out of the woods only to be back in pain instantly and out of the blue?   Sciatica is misdiagnosed most of the time and this misdiagnosis leads to the wrong actions and poor results.   What we cover:

  • What causes sciatica?
  • What every single person with sciatica has every single time, and what you need to pay attention to in order to start fixing this problem.
  • Some hidden problems you likely haven't considered that are intensifying your pain and making your sciatica even worse.
  • Why surgery should be last resort, not a first step, in helping your sciatica.
  • Why there is no short cut for fixing this potentially long-term problem.

#183 Should You Use Alternative Therapies?

Michael Phelps, the greatest Olympian EVER, caused a massive stir this Olympics with the small circular bruise marks that were found all over his back… “OMG he uses cupping?” Said with joy. or “OMG he uses cupping?” Said with bitterness. Based on these responses, we decided it was worth a revisit of the concept...alternative therapies. What We Covered:
