We’re Changing the Podcast…

Listen on Google Play MusicOur only goal with this podcast is progress over perfection. Making improvements over the course of time to learn, experiment, and create a show that we are deeply proud of. We want to make an impact on the world through education and inspiration surrounding the Thought For Food Lifestyle. Of course, we have to listen to ourselves and understand what we like and dislike about the podcast, but we also need external input and feedback to make this happen. So, we created a podcast survey that covered the main questions we wanted answered by our listeners, and you delivered! We had 126 responses, which is significantly more than we were expecting. We’re incredibly thankful for everyone that participated in helping us in the future of TFF and have a say in how we’re going to change the podcast.

We decided it might be helpful for listeners to go over the results and discuss how we’re going to implement these changes to better improve the podcast. So in this episode, we sit down and go through the main takeaways of each question posed in the survey, and then finish with how we plan on changing things. This podcast has become so much more than a fun side project, it’s very much our passion and we hope to make it something really, really great. We also hope you’ll continue providing feedback and criticism so we can continue evolving. It’s pretty amazing to see how much we’ve changed and improved since the beginning of this project. THANK YOU! Enjoy the show.

-Jackson and Aaron

Nathan Runkle on Mercy For Animals, The Future of Food, and Finding Your Voice

Nathan Runkle on Mercy For Animals, The Future of Food, and Finding Your Voice

Listen on Google Play MusicWhile the majority of discussion at Thought For Food is rooted in our strengths in nutrition science and adventurous, healthy lifestyles, there is something much greater at stake than increasing our performance as athletes. The reason that both of us live a completely plant-based, vegan lifestyle is due to the fact that 60 billion animals are unnecessarily slaughtered for human consumption every year. The conditions of factory farms are absolutely and utterly abominable. Once the two of us became aware of the realities of industrialized animal agriculture and the toll it takes on both the conscious, innocent beings that are a product of the system and the planet at large, we simply couldn’t support it any longer.

This week’s guest is a visionary in leading the charge towards changing this. Nathan Runkle is the founder and executive director of Mercy For Animals, an international animal rights organization that has over 120 employees and has been integral in changing policies, hearts, and minds towards making the world a more compassionate place for animals. He started the organization at 15 with zero resources and no real strategy – except one mission to save animals. Nathan just released a new book, titled Mercy For Animals, which chronicles his journey of starting MFA, stories of heroic undercover investigations and open rescues, the future of food, and more. It’s a fantastic look into the reasons behind ethical veganism and the plight that farm animals face in today’s food system.

We talk about the moment that catalyzed the birth of Mercy For Animals, the realities of “humane” animal operations, ag-gag laws, the role of clean meat in transforming our food system, and plenty more. It was truly an honor to have Nathan on the podcast, and I found him as articulate as he is compassionate. I’m also incredibly inspired by the work of MFA, and very proud to have contributed through my Vegan Alpletic campaign earlier this summer. Nathan and his team are changing the world, and I hope this conversation inspires you or your friends and family to choose the more compassionate path.

-Jackson

Why You Should Stop Working Out

Why You Should Stop Working Out

Listen on Google Play MusicHere in the West, we live within a culture that emphasizes certain body types, #fitnessgoals, and if you’re ain’t first, you’re last. Working out, exercise, and fitness are a means to an end – weight loss and muscle gain. We say f*ck that. Sure, weight loss and improved health can be added bonuses from exercise, among a myriad of other benefits, but here at Thought For Food, one of our goals is to shift the mindset away from exercise as a chore and towards a fulfilling and enjoyable experience. This is all about perspective, though. “Exercise” is a huge part of both our lives, and we’ve both been those performance and results obsessed freaks. We still struggle with exercise addiction. Finding a healthy relationship with exercise is all about understanding when to go deep when needed and when to chill when it’s time. Finding something that you love doing, and that allows for a sense of fulfillment and adventure. Because exercise is supposed to feel good (okay, maybe not always). It’s supposed to be something you look forward to, not dread. So, for those of you looking to begin an exercise routine and establish positive and healthy habits, or maybe you’re a veteran that wants to reconnect with why you started in the first place, this episode is for you. We hope this helps you rethink what exercise means to you, and it’s helpful for us to discuss these issues. It’s a process that we are going through as well. So, go outside, move your body, do epic shit, and enjoy the journey. Because if you don’t, then what’s the point?

-Jackson and Aaron

Clean Meat & Plant-Based Food Tech 101 with Christie Lagally

Clean Meat & Plant-Based Food Tech 101 with Christie Lagally

Listen on Google Play MusicIf you’ve been following the podcast for a while, you know we’re big fans of the idea of using a combo of education and market-based solutions to end factory farming and shift towards eating a more healthy, compassionate, and sustainable diet. We’re also extremely fascinated with the idea of ‘clean meat,’ which is meat created by growing animal cells in a lab to absolutely transform the agricultural system. The Good Food Institute is on the cutting edge of supporting the burgeoning plant-based and clean meat food tech industries. Their mission is to create a more healthy, humane, and sustainable food system and to end factory farming by 2050. We like that goal.

For more on the Good Food Institute itself, definitely go back and listen to our episode with Liz Specht (episode 31) and Emily Byrd (episode 63) or visit gfi.org. This week on the podcast, Jackson sits down with Christie Lagally, senior scientist at GFI, to talk all things clean meat. Clean meat is such a new idea and even newer technology, so there are a lot of questions. We thought it would be helpful for people to get a sort of “clean meat 101” primer episode and talk to Christie, who is an expert in this field. As someone who works directly with the companies starting in this space, Christie is seeing first hand where this is currently, and where it’s going. You may have heard about the deal involving Bill Gates, Richard Branson, and other investors bringing $17 million to the clean meat company Memphis Meats, which is huge. This technology quite literally has the potential to change the world.

Christie drops some knowledge on all things clean and plant-based meat, including:

  • the use of fetal bovine serum in clean meat technology
  • the current status and future of this industry
  • the process of how this technology works
  • plant-based food tech innovation
  • a discussion about the new plant-based class at UC Berkeley that Christie designed
  • plenty more!

Hopefully this episode gives you a stronger, more in depth understanding of market based innovation and its place in ending our reliance on factory farming, or gave you something brand new to think about. We believe this is such an important piece of the puzzle for solving the problems of animal welfare, climate change, and human health. It’s a pretty in depth episode, so bust out that notebook and take notes! Huge thank you to Christie and GFI for the work they are doing and for joining us on the show.

Vegan 101 w/ Live Planted!

Vegan 101 w/ Live Planted!

Listen on Google Play MusicThis whole “vegan” thing can be super daunting to people. Restrictive, difficult, radical, etc. are some of the common words associated with removing animals from your diet. But it doesn’t have to be this way. With a bit of planning, preparation, and practical focus, shifting to a plant-based diet is actually pretty doable. We decided to go back to basics and team up with Alyssa from the Live Planted Podcast, which is focused on practical vegan living. We went through our favorite pieces of advice for the person brand new to this lifestyle, such as cookbooks, staple meals, and a bit of the basic science and reasoning behind going vegan. We also answered some listener questions from social media! Hope it’s helpful, and if you’re a seasoned plant-eater, be sure to share this episode with someone who is curious or just starting their vegan shift. And if you have any of your own tips or advice that we may have missed, drop us an email to tfflifestyle@gmail.com. Now go eat some plants already!

How To Travel on a Plant-Based Diet

How To Travel on a Plant-Based Diet

Listen on Google Play Music
Traveling is one of the greatest gifts of life. Exploring different places, cultures, and foods is something both of us are extremely passionate about. But how do you do it if you’re plant-based? Many people don’t believe it’s possible to both eat a vegan diet and travel around the world. Well, folks, in 2017, the times they are a changin’. With so many plant-based options from grocery stores to restaurants around the globe, it’s now easier than ever. Jackson recently returned from a 6 week long trip in Europe, which included an epic cycling portion that tested his plant-based requirements, and has been to Thailand as a vegan. Aaron has traveled all over the world, including Turkey and South America.

In this episode, we give our best tips and advice for eating plant-based abroad. We cover topics like the best technology applications to use, how to book accommodations, and what foods to look for as staples. We also zoom out and talk philosophically for a bit, discussing how we believe you shouldn’t limit the experience of traveling because of fear of losing control of your diet. The focus should be doing the absolute best you can when it comes to remaining plant-based, but that nobody is perfect. Let us know – what are your best tips for surviving as a plant eater while traveling the world? What advice would you give? Send us an email at tfflifestyle@gmail.com.

Survey time! Please consider leaving your thoughts and constructive criticisms on our podcast survey by clicking http://bit.ly/tffsurvey so that we can improve and refine TFF. We are leaving it open for another week, so get in your response! You’ll also be entered to win a special care package from us!

We were also recently guests on two podcasts: How To Health and Plant Yourself. We definitely recommend going and listening to those interviews for a different taste of TFF on the other side of the microphone!

That’s it from us. Enjoy the show!

-Jackson

Vegan 101 w/ Live Planted!
1:22:01
2017-09-27 14:36:03 UTC 1:22:01

How to Eat Plant-Based on a Budget with Toni Okamoto
1:15:37
2017-10-07 11:37:27 UTC 1:15:37
How to Eat Plant-Based on a Budget with Toni Okamoto

Listen on Google Play MusicOne of the main factors that we take into account when making food choices is price. The other two major factors are taste and convenience. When you optimize all three into a healthy, compassionate, and sustainable paradigm, an amazing way of living occurs. However, one of the biggest misconceptions about plant-based or vegan diets is that they are extremely elitist and expensive. You have to shop at Whole Foods. You have to eat goji berries to stay alive. You must get all of your produce at the farmer’s market, and it better be organic, damn it!

Well, we disagree with these sentiments. And this episode has been highly requested for quite some time. After mulling over how we wanted to formulate this episode for a while, we decided to invite on the master of this realm, Toni Okamoto of Plant-Based on a Budget to share her wisdom. Toni started Plant-Based on a Budget in 2012 in order to help people eat more plants without breaking the bank, and has since evolved into a huge platform that has everything from recipes to meal plans to how-to videos. She was also featured in the recent documentary What The Health. Suffice it to say, she knows her stuff on the topic of eating well and frugally.

The three of us sit down to share our very different perspectives and advice for eating plants on a budget. We debunk some of the major misconceptions on this topic, share tips, and talk about our favorite meals and ideas. We think it’ll be a very helpful guide for anyone looking to tighten up that food budget or new to the plant-based lifestyle, so share the episode with your friends and family! We’d also love to see where you guys are listening to the show this week, so tag @tfflifestyle and @plantbasedonabudget on your Instagram stories/posts and share the love!

Definitely check out Toni’s work to learn much, much more on this subject with more in depth guides and recipes, and look out for her new book coming soon! And if you have questions for us, send us an email to tfflifestyle@gmail.com or jump into our private Facebook group and maybe we’ll do an exclusive Q&A with Toni in the future.

For those of you new to Thought For Food, we have a really awesome eBook geared towards the plant-based endurance athlete, called Dude, Where Do You Get Your Protein? It’s available for $10 on the store, so click here to check it out. It features a bunch of budget-friendly, athlete-focused recipes that are delicious and simple. It clears up all the misinformation about protein for plant-based athletes, something we didn’t cover in today’s episode. #alwaysbelearning

Finally, could you do us a humungous favor? If you enjoy the show, please write us a review on iTunes to help us grow and to share what you think of the show. It helps so much, and we really appreciate everyone that has done so already.

Enough from us, enjoy the show!

We’re Changing the Podcast…

1:06:14

-Jackson

Why Fiber is the Most Underrated Nutrient For Our Health with Dr. Will Bulsiewicz

Welcome back to Fiber February everyone. We’ve been thrilled at the response so far, and we’re so excited to be sharing the science and importance of this fabulous nutrient with the world. We’re learning along with you, and are quickly realizing just how unbelievably amazing fiber is for our health. If you’ve been fascinated by the health implications of fiber and plants, then today’s episode is going to blow your mind.

We’re excited to have Dr. Will Bulsiewicz on the podcast. Dr. B is a board-certified Gastroenterologist and gut health expert. He graduated from the Georgetown University School of Medicine and trained in internal medicine at Northwestern, before specializing in gastroenterology at the University of North Carolina. He also holds a master’s degree in clinical investigation from Georgetown. Dr. B has recently become fascinated with the link between what we eat and the health of our gut, and sees the impact first hand in the hospital.

Today we talk all things fiber, gut health, and what he sees as a gastroenterologist in a country deficient in this nutrient. We dive into everything from the mechanisms of fiber and our microbiome and how that impacts our overall health, to why the quality of our poop should be considered the sixth vital sign and a story about poop smoothies. It’s a fantastic conversation, and Dr. B is definitely part of the dump squad. It’s always humbling to talk with experts in a field, particularly medicine. Dr. Bulsiewicz is definitely an expert of the gut. We hope you enjoy the conversation!

Couple of quick announcements:

  1. In case you missed the memo, epic dump shirts are now available! Click here to head over to our shop where we have men’s and women’s tees available. They’re awesome and already flying off the shelves, so pick one up while you can! If you’re a Patreon supporter of $10 or more per month, you get a special discount code for 10% off anything in the store, so visit patreon.com/thoughtforfood to get it!
  2. I’m (Jackson) thrilled to announce that I’ve been selected to speak at TEDxCU in April. I will be bringing the epic dumps message to the world from the stage of my Alma Mater, CU Boulder. It’s an honor and a privilege, and I’m beyond excited for this opportunity. More details to come, but I just want to say that you’re all a huge part of making this happen. Creating this podcast and platform has given me so much purpose and meaning in my life, and the TFF community has always inspired us to pursue epic shit and strive to do good in this world. So thank you! Definitely stay tuned for more, it would be absolutely amazing to have a TFF crew representing the epic dumps revolution. More info at tedxcu.com!
  3. Finally, keep tagging your photos on social media with #fiberfebruary and #takeepicdumps, we’ve been loving the fiber photos so far so keep em coming and inspiring your community to eat more plants and more fiber. Follow us on Instagram to share the fiber love! We’re @tfflifestyle

That’s it, enjoy the show!

Sloan has recently become passionate about plant-based nutrition, and wants to combine that with her degree in health education. We talk about eating disorders in athletes, van life in New Zealand, and her thoughts about nutrition.

Phenomenal Fiber with Dr. Pamela Fergusson, RD, Ph.D

Welcome back to Fiber February, where we’re talking all things fiber, gut health, and epic dumps to spread awareness about the importance of this nutrient, of which deficiency is a widespread epidemic. This week we’re thrilled to bring Pamela Fergusson to the podcast to talk about fiber and plant-based eating from the perspective of a true plant-based nutrition expert. We have a great conversation ranging from her background in nutrition, the role of fiber in the diet and where to get it, can you have too much fiber, how to manage bloating and gas when transitioning to a plant-based diet, and more. We’re confident you’ll learn a thing or two about fabulous fiber.

Be sure to follow Pam on social media, she’s @drpamela.rd on Instagram and Dr. Pamela Fergusson on Facebook. Her website is pamelafergusson.com.

Welcome to Fiber February

If you’re a regular listener and follower of TFF, then you’ll know how much we’re obsessed with plants, fiber, and gut health, and how all three of those things work in perfect synchronicity to create epic, blissful, bowel movements.

We wanted to create a podcast and social media campaign that brings awareness to the importance and connection between health and fiber and plant foods, and of course taking epic dumps. It can seem like a big middle school level poop joke, but we’re dead serious about this topic and we’re tired of the anti-poop epidemic that is sweeping the Western world. We want to make pooping great again.

So in this episode, we introduce the campaign and talk about what you can expect and how you can get involved. What the point of all of this is. And how we can implement it in our actual lives.

So listen up! And prepare to hear a lot about poop and plants this month.

The Evidence-Based Trio: 3 Nutrients Every Plant Eater Needs

The Evidence-Based Trio: 3 Nutrients Every Plant Eater Needs

We constantly get questions about what supplements to take if you’re on a plant-based diet, which supplements we take, and why. This is definitely an important and widespread question, and we’ll definitely do a more in depth What’s The Deal style episode on some more supplements and the supplement industry in general, but we wanted to focus on the three primary nutrients of concern for the plant-based population — collectively known as the evidence-based trio —due to their stature and importance in the scientific literature. The science is pretty clear that anyone on a plant-based diet, even if you eat a super healthy one, should be supplementing with these three nutrients due to their physiological importance but also the fact that they are very very difficult to get in sufficient amounts in the plant kingdom. So if you’re curious about what supplements to take on a plant-based diet, these are the Big Three that are pretty much non negotiable. In this episode we go through the data and the science behind them and why they are so important.

Full disclosure: this episode is a collaboration between us and Lightdrop, the new company that Jackson has started working for that produces the product Complement, which is a supplement of these three nutrients. We believe strongly in the science behind the product and use it every day. They are supporting us through the sale of each bottle you buy, and we’re more than happy to spread the word on Complement, which is a vegan product created by vegans which is important in helping the plant-based community thrive. We’re thrilled to announce a very special offer for the listeners of this show: get the evidence-based trio in one, easy to use, and high quality spot with Complement for only $1 per day. The Ultimate Guide to Transitioning to a Plant-Based Lifestyle: Part 2

This is the final part of our two-part series on making the switch to a plant-based diet. A comprehensive guide to the basics of adopting a vegan, plant-based lifestyle. In the first episode, which you should definitely listen to before this one, was all about the WHY of plant-based living. The theoretical framework for the three main pillars of veganism: health, ethics, and environment. This episode is all about the HOW. The practical side. What books you should read, documentaries you should watch, gear you should have and foods you should eat. We did our best to cover a broad range of essential topics without going too deep since there simply wasn’t enough time. The goal of this series is to give you the knowledge and tools you need to launch into a successful and sustainable plant-based lifestyle! Definitely look through the show notes below to dig into the resources we discussed, and let us know if we missed anything of note! Share this far and wide with your plant-interested or omnivorous friends and family. We want this to break out of the echochamber to help people brand new to plant-based eating! Thanks for listening.

The Ultimate Guide to Transitioning to a Plant-Based Diet: Part 1

When we first started our transition to a plant-based lifestyle, we wish there was a comprehensive guide, grounded in reason and logic, to help with understanding the why’s and how’s of eating and living this way. Without a proper understanding of both the theoretical and practical frameworks for a specific behavior change, it’s going to be difficult to catalyze a sustainable, long term shift in dietary or lifestyle behavior. 100 episodes later, we’ve decided to remaster our 3rd ever episode and break it into two parts to help you or your friends and family move towards a healthier, compassionate, and sustainable lifestyle. This is our attempt at that guide.

This week, it’s all about the zoomed out, theoretical perspective. Why should we eat a plant-based diet? We draw upon discussions surrounding the “three pillars” of veganism, which are health, ethics/morality, and environment. We dive deep into specific studies, data, and arguments for why we should eat as many plants as possible to give you the basis for making this change. Know your why. We discuss the basics and essentials of these three pillars to paint the picture of why a plant-based diet matters. Next week, we’ll dive into the practical, HOW to do the plant-based thing. We hope this helps you and your network find ease and confidence in centering your diet around plants, for our health, the health of animals, and our planet. Definitely check out the show notes to go deeper into the science and data!
