26. On being in crisis {Relevant & Resonant}

Relevant & Resonant is a new, once monthly segment for the podcast where media guru, Haley Quinn and I have chats about what is going on in the world, in the media and in our culture and how those events & situations relate to our health, body image, and healing.

This week we are talking about how dealing with natural disasters (like hurricanes!) may effect our own healing process. We talk about being in a state of crisis, and the cycle of growth.

24. On healthism: what it is & why we need to question our pursuit of health

In this month's solo episode, Holly is talking about how healthism is yet another way our culture has found to 'other,' oppress and stigmatize fatness. We talk about why health isn't something you morally need to work towards, and how this pursuit is harming more people than it is doing good.

At the end of the day I want you to start questioning your own reasons for pursuing health and wellness, and ask yourself whether or not it's something you really want to spend your time and energy on. And if it IS, get clear about why. I also want you to start to be way more conscious about the "health" and weight messages you're putting out into the universe, so that we can stop this perpetuation of unrealistic beauty, health and body standards.

19. Body Acceptance, Strength & Yoga with Dana Falsetti

"Dana Falsetti is an international yoga teacher, writer, and advocate for living an authentic life that begins with self-love and leads to your beautiful, badass self. She has been recognized by millions across social media for her message: anybody can practice yoga and everybody has a right to be their true self no matter what body they are in.

Dana came to her yoga practice during an ultimate low, a place of depression largely from focusing on weight loss and body shaming her whole life. She spent a year dieting and exercising which led to significant weight loss, only to realize that being smaller didn't make her happier because while her body changed, she didn't. Suffering from a binge eating disorder, she struggled with body image and self worth her whole life until she realized she could actually accept and love herself as is.

Dana and I had the pleasure of chatting about:

  • Dieting in childhood, and the binge/ restrict cycle
  • Letting go of the desire to lose weight
  • Weight stigma & body diversity in the yoga community
  • Getting back into your body amidst feelings of shame
  • Facing the internal dialogue
  • Worthiness & embodiment
  • Tapping into internal strength through physical practice
  • Finding happiness/ contentment in AnyBody, and beyond the physical

  • The types of pressure I felt, as many other young women do to be perfect and look perfect
  • How the diet culture crept into my own mind and paved the way for my disordered eating habits

27. FitsNOPE & Body Positive Pilates with Megan Dowd

Megan Dowd is a virtual pilates coach for the woman who is ready to take care of business. I love Megan's approach because she doesn't waste time focussing on getting the "perfect" body, or weight loss for the sake of thinness. She places a huge emphasis on body awareness, movement that feels amazing, body acceptance (no matter what body you're in!) and breathing as a way to open up space in your body & brain.

Megan is a total movement warrior and she's changing the traditional pilates model, so if you're down with her work you can get more of her in a few ways:

Relevant & Resonant is a new, once monthly segment for the podcast where media guru, Haley Quinn and I have chats about what is going on in the world, in the media and in our culture and how those events & situations relate to our health, body image, and healing.

This week we are talking about how dealing with natural disasters (like hurricanes!) may effect our own healing process. We talk about being in a state of crisis, and the cycle of growth.

Maddy Moon is an author, motivational speaker, life coach retreat leader, and she's also a fellow podcast host on her show Mind Body Musings. She teaches women how to heal their minds, hearts, and spirits by stepping into their femininity and stepping out of their perfectionist tendencies.

After having struggled with disordered eating during her time spent body building, Maddy decided it was time to close that chapter and write a new one. She's helped so many women to do the same, and is sharing some of her wisdom with us today while we talk through subjects like perfectionism, our different energies, recovering from eating disorders, accepting her body, tools for healing, letting go of the need to control food, and sooo much more.

11. Intuition: A tool for sustainable & inspired transformation with Lauren Aletta

This week we dive deep into harnessing the power and wisdom of our intuition. Lauren explains that by learning to listen to that inner voice -those gut feelings that we've been trained to ignore- we're better able to navigate our lives and follow our passions.

Lauren Aletta is a teacher, author and guide of all things intuition and energy. Her work has empowered numerous humans like you and I to tune in to what she call's the 'soul self,' so that we can feel more connected, supported and guided in our own lives.

She recently released her new book Into The Woods, which is a navigational map to the magic within you. And it's available for download & pre-sale. You can snag your copy here.

Some of the highlights from our chat on intuition include:
  • Intuition isn't for a select few; it's already within us all
  • Using tarot & oracle to tap in & strengthen your intuitive "muscles"
  • (Re)learning to trust those gut feelings

  • The types of pressure I felt, as many other young women do to be perfect and look perfect
  • How the diet culture crept into my own mind and paved the way for my disordered eating habits

28. The practice that will change your body image [solo episode]

Intuitive eating sounds great, right? But to actually make the leap and fully abandon dieting, well that's the hard part. But in this week's episode Holly explains the exact practice that sparked her to once and for all make peace with her body and let go of the food obsession.

This practice helped Holly let go of counting calories, carbs, macros and allowed her to eat what felt and sounded good moment to moment. It helped her stop binge eating, and enabled her to step out of the diet cycle for good.

If you're stuck in the diet cycle this ep. could change the game.

Something I love about Jess's work & blog is that she always keeps it simple. It's really easy to get wrapped up in "not having the right tools" or "messing up" when there's a blank page in front of you. But she does a great job at bringing it back to the basics while continually producing inspiring & aesthetically pleasing work.

  • walking the fine line between inspiration and copycatting
  • How bullet journaling has helped her develop a self care routine

  • The SoulSelf vs. the HumanSelf

07. My messy body history: solo episode

You guys already know what I'm about, but I wanted to share a story that I haven't really shared outside of my close personal circle. In honor of National Eating Disorder Awareness Week 2017 and their theme, Let's talk about it, I felt it was time to share MY body story; my struggles with food + body image.

Something I care so deeply about is helping other women who struggle with feeling happy in their bodies + feeling like the boss around food. And while my advice + encouragement have the potential to help struggling women, I'm hoping that my own journey through all this messy stuff will take that advice + encouragement one step further; I'm hoping that my story will provide motivation + TRUST as you work through all of your own messy food + body stuff.

In this episode I walk you through:
  • My relationship with food + my body as a child and into my teenage years
  • The types of pressure I felt, as many other young women do to be perfect and look perfect
  • How the diet culture crept into my own mind and paved the way for my disordered eating habits
  • My journey through vegetarianism and veganism
  • How dieting and being "healthy becomes a part of our identity + source of bonding

31. How to REDESIGN your relationship with food

Why can't learning Intuitive Eating and being body positive be as easy as redoing your house? Your hair? Your website?

It might not be as easy, but it can be almost as tangible. In this episode I'm breaking down the similarities between redesigning your spaces and redesigning your relationship with food, and giving you a worksheet to help make this process more tangible.

Key principles:

  • Keep it simple & use the tools/ skills you already have at your disposal
  • Small baby steps add up faster than you think
  • Pick a few key areas of focus and create intentional actions for making these a reality.

12. Bullet Journaling for Health|Self care with Jess Chung of Pretty Prints and Paper

On this week's episode I had the pleasure of chatting with Jess of Pretty Prints and Paper. Jess is a blogger, teacher, bullet journaling & hand lettering enthusiast and all around creative boss lady.

In the episode we chatted about:
  • Her journey into a creative practice
  • The importance of setting intentions
  • Using creativity to strengthen intuition
  • walking the fine line between inspiration and copycatting
  • How bullet journaling has helped her develop a self care routine

  • The SoulSelf vs. the HumanSelf
  • Dealing with and recognizing fear, anxiety & burnout
  • Identifying and reflecting on your seasons of growth & life

  • Be disciplined with your calendar
  • Set some boundaries when it comes to how you're spending your time
  • Make time for quality friend time
  • Make time for quiet time
  • Go out of your way to do something big & bold as self-care

  • Always be gentle with yourself

08. Letting go of the 'vegan' label + listening to your needs with Carrie Forrest

Carrie Forrest is a blogger based in California who's mission is to create + share inspiration for healthy, happy, balanced living. I first found Carrie way back when I decided to go Vegan, at the time she too was vegan and was creating tons of plant based recipes for her readers.

Since Carrie was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease + later, thyroid cancer, she had to make some shifts when it came to her diet.

In the episode Carrie and I hash out her reasons for transitioning out of veganism, and learning to listen to her body's needs.

Some of the episode highlights:
  • Her transition into and out of veganism
  • The signs that her diet wasn't working for her
  • learning to navigate an autoimmune disease
  • overcoming food obsession + binge eating disorder
  • Understanding that 'health' doesn't have a size

  • When trying to be "healthy" turns into an obsession
  • My rock bottom
  • My 4 truths; the things that keep me from returning to the dieting + disordered eating
  • My upcoming course Body Truce; another tool to help you work through your own body history

On this week's episode I had the pleasure of chatting with Jess of Pretty Prints and Paper. Jess is a blogger, teacher, bullet journaling & hand lettering enthusiast and all around creative boss lady.

In the episode we chatted about:
  • Her journey into a creative practice
  • The importance of setting intentions
  • Using creativity to strengthen intuition
  • walking the fine line between inspiration and copycatting
  • How bullet journaling has helped her develop a self care routine
