147 – The Ensign, the Made In USA menswear hub 57:39 |
2017-09-21 01:33:24 UTC | 57:39 |
147 – The Ensign, the Made In USA menswear hubThe Ensign is an e-commerce platform showcasing American luxury menswear: https://theensign.us/ Co-founders Luis Morales and Jason Wagg have backgrounds defined by work for premiere labels like Tom Ford and Ralph Lauren. In this interview they discuss the state of American menswear design and domestic garment manufacturing, and the company they are running to amplify and ride its resurgence.
“We really waned to highlight and create awareness in America on the design talent that is here, but also the fact that it’s resolating on a global level, and that was always our goal. We wanted to take the concept of Neo-American Luxury to the global consumer.” – Luis Morales“It wasn’t surprising that so many Japanese retailers were very invested, and were very interested in designers that we wanted to work with that were based here in America. What was very surprising is how little American retail support they had. We understood the first part of it, but the second part was really– it really reaffirmed that what our idea was, and what we felt our motivations were, were in the right direction.” – Luis Morales“One of the exciting things about menswear right now, is that guys don’t have that uniform anymore. We don’t have to wear suits and ties, and sometimes it’s great to wear a suit and tie, but now it’s a more special thing. Now when you wear a suit and tie you want it to look right. You want it to be for a certain occasion, and you are able to distinguish yourself in a way that you weren’t able to before, because everybody was wearing a suit and tie.” – Jason Wagg“Every single one of our designers is a passion project for us, because we believe in them. Our business is to take an investment in them, a lot of times emotionally, and we want to communicate that to other people, and we want them to get excited about it too.” – Jason WaggThe post 147 – The Ensign, the Made In USA menswear hub appeared first on American Fashion Podcast. |

They’re hungry and they’ve got good ideas, and we have a lot of original talent coming out of America. 2017-09-21 01:33:24 UTC | 1:06:06 |
142 – Understanding Influencers with Brittany HennessyAs the Director of Influencer Talent in the Hearst Branded Content Studio, Brittany Hennessy connects influencers with brands for collaboration. The content they produce is featured by dozens of Hearst publications, including Elle, Cosmopolitan, Harper’s Bazaar, Esquire, Seventeen, and Redbook. Influencer marketing is a hot business right now. Brittany shares how she cuts through some of the noise to see the players and the field. Brittany and her husband Alexander are the Co-Founders of CreatorsCollective, which provides advice to influencers and brands about how to work with each other. “I think it works best when all of the pieces work together. People are very quick to move all their money into influencer marketing, or pull all their money from TV. It works best when it’s all a cohesive plan. And I think that’s the struggle most people have, is they can’t figure out how to make everything work together.” – Brittany Hennessy
Also, Charles discusses his recent work with the Save The Garment Center. STGC is a non-profit which protects the critical infrastructure of the New York fashion industry. They have a new position paper on the future of the garment industry. Join STGC as a member [here]. 141 – Mizzen and Main – Performance Fabric Menswear 19:07 |
2017-09-21 01:33:24 UTC | 19:07 |
141 – Mizzen and Main – Performance Fabric MenswearMizzen and MainKevin Lavelle is CEO of Mizzen and Main, a menswear line that prioritizes function over tradition in its fabric selection. In this interview, the conversation covers…
“All the blood in the water that’s happening from the broader retail world… it’s a really exciting time to be an apparel company. Just, with the changing nature of people’s buying habits, and Amazon is just changing the way people think about what it means to buy things online, even more than they already have, pop-ups and retail partnerships… all of those things… there is no shortage of opportunity out there. For all the fear that’s happening, some of the old guards might go away, and that’s sad from a legacy perspective, and it’s going to require some pretty significant changes, but I can’t wait to see what’s next.” – Kevin LavelleThe post 141 – Mizzen and Main – Performance Fabric Menswear appeared first on American Fashion Podcast. |

Show Notes – September 2017 3:33 |
2017-10-02 23:16:39 UTC | 3:33 |
Show Notes – September 2017A few show notes… Producer and host Charles Beckwith will be in Los Angeles recording the show October 9 through 16 (2017), and would love to meet some of our listeners while he is out there. If you want to meet up and show him around the Los Angeles fashion district, he would love a tour guide. If you want to connect or know someone we should interview in Los Angeles, send your show notes via email to info@americanfashionpodcast.com Now, speaking of reaching out, we need some help from our listeners. A lot of people who would love this show do not know about American Fashion Podcast. There are a lot of ways you can help, but if you have a newsletter or a social media following that goes out to a lot of fashion people, please let them know about a couple of your favorite episodes of this show. A major obstacle for us in getting discovered by more of the right people is, if you look up the top fashion podcasts on iTunes, you may see that we’re pretty low in the rankings there. We’ve occasionally been #1, but more often we’re like #33 or #47, and even ranked behind shows that haven’t published a new episode in years. The reason for this, I recently learned, is that iTunes only counts things that happen on their desktop app, so if you use the desktop app to listen or review the show on iTunes (please and thank you), then our ranking goes up, but for our roughly 15,000 weekly subscribers, most of whom just have new episodes downloaded straight to their phones, you don’t get counted anymore. This is why a lot of far less interesting podcasts are ranked above us on iTunes, because those rankings are insanely messed up. Most of you fabulous people listening each week never need to look up our show in the iTunes store on your computer, so they do not count you. iTunes rankings are not an accurate gauge of any show’s audience, but they do help people find shows. So, please help some other fashion fanatics find the right show. Please tell people this show exists however you can. Please also give us a quick review on whatever platform or player you use to listen to podcasts, but especially iTunes, because people just aren’t seeing that we exist, and that is the single largest driver of podcast listenership by far. If you are friends with someone, perhaps someone older who has great stories to tell about the garment industry, we want to talk to them. We talk a lot about now and tomorrow on this show, but we also like hearing about yesterday. Definitely looking for more guests with a long personal histories in the fashion business. Maybe just tell them it’s a radio show though, you probably don’t want to get into explaining podcasts to people who don’t use smartphones. We are very likely doing our next American Fashion Podcast LIVE show in November with a HUGE designer. Still locking down details (like the exact date and venue) with her PR team, but if you want a free ticket for that and future shows, click the Live Show link to get on that list. Thank you so much for listening, and we hope you keep listening, to the fashion industry’s favorite show, American Fashion Podcast. /show notes #1 The post Show Notes – September 2017 appeared first on American Fashion Podcast. |

149 – Talking Timelessness With Jeweler Izaskun ZabalaIzaskun Zabala discusses her business and history as a New York City-based jewelry designer whose major inspiration is an idea of timelessness. We also talk about ancient cultures and palm reading, though that provokes a bit of an argument when she tries to explain how palm reading is a science.

146 – GQ Creative Director Jim MooreJim Moore details how he directs fashion coverage and visual language at the leading men’s magazine. He discusses their Best New Menswear Designers of America feature, and its new global variant in collaboration with Gap. Mr. Moore has been at GQ for nearly 40 years, was instrumental in the creation of New York Men’s Fashion Week, and delivers deep insights into the here and now of men’s fashion. “I think what you’re finding is this new breed of designers that really… they have a mission, they have a business plan, and they want to get their clothes into Barneys or they want to do a collaboration with Uniqlo someday. They’re hungry and they’ve got good ideas, and we have a lot of original talent coming out of America. I think that is something to celebrate, and we’re really interested in that.” – Jim Moore, GQ Creative DirectorReferences:

142 – Understanding Influencers with Brittany Hennessy 1:06:06 |
2017-10-02 23:16:39 UTC | 1:06:06 |
