Jason Tselentis Podcast Interview

Jason Tselentis chats about all of the important topics with me – artificial intelligence (and how it may affect design), James Cameron, Papyrus, and student portfolios.

Recorded at this year’s HOW Design Live Conference, we also briefly mention that Jason has written a number of graphic design books, formally wrote for Speak Up, still writes for some of the design magazines, and teaches at Winthrop University. He was unsuccessful in his first attempt to stop James Cameron from using Papyrus

Bill Gardner, LogoLounge, graphic design podcast interview

LogoLounge and the LogoLounge books may have only been around since 2001, but they have left such a large mark on the industry, they feel like they’ve been with us forever. At this year’s HOW Design Live Conference, I once again got to speak with Bill Gardner of Gardner Design about, well, logos. We talk LogoLounge, the logo trend reports, the upcoming LogoLounge 10(!) and more.

We also talk about Batman, Superman, other superhero logos, and logos that are the shape of a cookie. If we would have recorded a few days later, pretty sure we would have discussed how he is a Sith Lord, but I guess I had to document that in word form…

Enjoy.

Nikita Prokhorov ambigram design podcast interview

Nikita Prokhorov was attending this year’s HOW Design Live Conference, and I knew immediately that I wanted to have him on the show. His ambigram work, as well as his book, Ambigrams Revealed: A Graphic Designer’s Guide To Creating Typographic Art Using Optical Illusions, Symmetry, and Visual Perception, were the main topics.

We also talk about his first years in Russia and how that has influenced his work.

It’s weird, I’ve known Nikita online for a long-time, but I don’t think we’d ever had the chance to meet in-person. I guess it’s things like this that make HOW one of my favorite weeks of the year. Enjoy.

Justin Dauer: The Reflex Blue Show #171

Justin Dauer met with me just before the HOW Design Live Conference got kicked into full-gear in Chicago two weeks ago. In 2015, Justin wrote an article on “Resetting Agency Culture” for A List Apart. Like a lot of great creative things, something about it struck a nerve with people. And then the thoughts outlined in the article felt they needed a bit more room to breathe, so Justin started writing a book – Cultivating a Creative Culture.

We speak of the article, the book, Street Fighter II, Batman v Superman, and more. Enjoy.

HOW Design Live 2017, Conference Recap 4 of 4 : Amy Reyes, Cami Travis-Groves, Emily Potts

Amy Reyes, Cami Travis-Groves, and Emily Potts discuss the final full day of 2017’s HOW Design Live in Chicago.

No week seems to go by quicker than the one spent at HOW Design Live. Seeing that many graphic designers / website designers / writers / photographers / creative people together is an amazing experience. Be sure to check out Emily’s “It’s a Wrap! Highlights from HOW Design Live Chicago” recap for Neenah Paper, as well as her interviews for Moxie Sozo we talk about.

Amy and Cami were two of the HOW Champions this year. It’s a great program (I think I saw there were 16 in total, but I could be off by a bit) where the Champions are available to help first time attendees get the most out of the conference – like an ambassador of all things HOW.

While in Chicago, I also recorded seven interview podcasts throughout the week, and will start releasing them next week.

Enjoy.

Justin AhrensDavid Carson, Aaron Draplin, and Doug Grever discuss the third day of 2017’s HOW Design Live in Chicago.

This was the final day of the exhibit hall, and I made the most of it by spending a few minutes with Aaron Draplin while he set up his pop-up shop. I then headed over to the booth of this year’s social cause – Wheels4Water. Before I was able to speak to Justin Ahrens, AIGA Medalist David Carson walked by, and we went from there. I wrapped up the recap back at the Neenah Paper booth where I speak with Doug Grever about paper and packaging.

HOW Design Live 2017, Conference Recap 1 of 4 : Justin Ahrens, Mike Joosse, Sabine Lenz, Mike Miller, Christine Taylor

HOW Design Live Recap Podcast

Justin Ahrens (Rule29 and Wheels4Water), Mike Joosse (Designation Labs), Sabine Lenz (PaperSpecs), Mike Miller, and Christine Taylor (Hallmark and POPMinded) discuss the first day of 2017’s HOW Design Live in Chicago.

I still can’t believe this was recorded six days ago. For those who’ve been to HOW, you know that once returning to your regular schedule a few days later that there is a weird feeling of that first day. In some ways, it feels like it happened just hours ago – while at the same time feeling like a month away.

I wrote a few blog posts documenting the trip for Neenah Paper again this year if you want to also see recaps in written and photo form:

And of course, I did some podcasting while in Chicago. In the following days I have three more daily recaps to post, followed by seven interview podcasts that will go out over the next few months. I think I ended up with a great lineup of guests over the week, including two AIGA Medalists (one on a recap, one as a full show).

Thanks again for listening! Enjoy.

FORGE: The Reflex Blue Show #170

FORGE : Sarah Bergeron & Lynn Schneider of Emspace

Omaha’s Emspace Group (located just a few blocks, and across Pacific Street, from my office at Eleven19), got rid of their internship program around five years ago. Why? FORGE.

In an effort to find a different way to give back to the graphic design community (as well as giving back to the public relations and marketing communities as well), they created a free program for the college students in the area. Over the past five years, I have spoke at a FORGE panel, attended most (if not all) of the final class panels / portfolio reviews, and spoken with many of the students about their experience. It was  only a matter of time before we had a podcast talking about this great program.

Lynn Schneider (who came up with the idea of FORGE), and Sarah Bergeron (a former FORGEr, and now on the other side of the FORGE) join us to talk all things FORGE, and where it’s headed next. Cody Fenske (a former FORGEr himself) joins me to co-host. Enjoy.

Justin Ahrens: The Reflex Blue Show #165

Justin Ahrens – The Reflex Blue Show

Justin Ahrens of Rule29, one of my favorite guests, joins the Reflex Blue Show to discuss his Design Of podcast, Wheels 4 Water, Designing for Good, AIGA (Justin just joined the National Board), and the coming up way too soon and yet not soon enough HOW Design Live 2017 in Chicago (where he will once again be a speaker).

One of my favorite things about recording this show has been the ability to get to talk with some really great guests, and a lot of them. Somehow or another, Justin has been the only person, other than myself, to make at least one appearance on every season we’ve had, so I thank him for his availability, willingness, and ability to be able to talk about such a wide variety of design topics over the years.

And when it comes to things that seemed to have come along way too soon, I guess this is the beginning of our tenth(!) season of The Reflex Blue Show. Along with the two-plus seasons of The Be A Cast we did before this, November marked eleven years of podcasting – hard to fathom that when Nate Voss, Tom Nemitz, and I first launched that episode back in 2005 – but the calendar keeps moving.

And, a huge thanks to Cody Fenske for designing the podcast all new artwork for Season 10 (and as in the past, it may last a season or two more). He also designed some stickers (you know we love stickers around here) for the occasion, so if you see me throughout the year, be sure to ask for one.

Enjoy.

David Sherwin: The Reflex Blue Show #162

David Sherwin Podcast Interview

David Sherwin joins me for the last of the six interviews recorded at HOW Design Live in Atlanta. As one half of the newly formed The Sherwins LLC, we talk about building teams, working with teams, and going out on his own.

Last time David was on the show, he mentioned that he did some research on the podcast before agreeing to be a guest, and was super helpful in his assessment that we didn’t have any good way for visitors to find older podcasts (when you start a podcast, you just have them listed one after another, who knew we’d be around long enough to have anything to actually search for). Anyway, I did realize that David Sherwin was much smarter than myself, this made a lot of sense, and I took it to heart. I then went on to build (and maintain) a complete list of guests (seriously, huge thanks to all of the super talented folks who have recorded with me over the years, the show would not be the same without you), as well as a list of shows per season (yeah, I guess I’ve been recording a while now), and our ‘host’ favorites (if you’re new to the show, these are the ones we liked recording the most). So, thanks David, for being on the show again.

Enjoy.

HOW Design Live in Atlanta may have been a week ago, but it’s finally starting to settle in how much actually happened. It always amazes me that it really takes a few days after getting back from an event like this to process and realize what all happened. It probably helps that I record a decent amount while at the event, as it also gives me another chance to re-listen to what all was going on.

The night before the event started, I got together with a small group for barbecue, and did a pre-conference recording. Thanks to Justin Ahrens, Blair BradyVon GlitschkaStefan Mumaw, Matt PorterJamie Saunders, and Jamie Sims for chatting on this episode.

Seymour Chwast & Steven Heller: The Reflex Blue Show #156

Seymour Chwast and Steven Heller Podcast Interview

Looking through the archives of Seymour Chwast’s work does not take long to see years of anti-war work. But even with his studio work (The Pushpin Group, Inc., originally founded in 1954 as Push Pin Studios with Milton Glaser and Edward Sorel) and reputation in the design field, sometimes you still get a project so personal that you need to start a Kickstarter campaign to get it off the ground.

So, to document around 5,000 wars over the past 5,000+ years, Seymour Chwast has a Kickstarter campaign to promote the book Seymour Chwast at War with War.

And Steven Heller (who is no stranger to writing books on design), also joins us to speak about war, Kickstarter, being at war with war, and a little bit of branding and how it’s changed over the years.

Kate Bingaman-Burt: The Reflex Blue Show #151

Kate Bingaman-Burt Podcast Interview

AIGA Minnesota’s Design Camp brought a pleasant surprise – Kate Bingaman-Burt was one of the main speakers (and the 4th of 5 interviews we recorded while there).

I think I met Kate a few times at local (Omaha, Nebraska) AIGA events over a decade ago, but then she moved, and eventually wound up in Portland. I felt like she never really left though, as she has made quite the impression on the design world, and I kept seeing articles and posts about her and her projects – Obsessive Consumption, Daily Drawings (3,000 of them!), Credit Card drawings, and the like.

So, we speak of that, what you should be pursuing, graphic design classes, and more. Enjoy.

Emily Cohen

AIGA Minnesota’s Design Camp not only brought in the five 5 ‘main stage’ speakers (and a couple dozen Twin City speakers for breakout sessions), but also flew in the brutally honest design consultant that is Emily Cohen from New York (has she really not been on the show since 2011?). We talk about getting the right work, her Evolve conference, and why we need to find a specialty.

John Pickerill - trademark and copyright law interview

AIGA Minnesota’s Design Camp is the largest regional design conference for a reason – not only do they bring in 5 ‘main stage’ speakers, but there are a couple dozen breakout sessions held throughout the weekend as well. One of these happened to be with John Pickerell of Fredrikson & Byron, P.A.

Copyright Law? Trademark Law? Intellectual Property? Sure, let’s discuss…

James Edmondson Podcast Interview

You may have followed some of my 2015 trip to AIGA Minnesota’s Design Camp on Neenah Paper’s blog, or even caught the podcast recap, but I made sure to record some interviews with five of the speakers while there as well.

First up? Type and lettering specialist James Edmondson. We talk about his Oh No Type Co., type design, lettering, and making Hobo (and longtime readers know we love Hobo) into Hobeaux. We also talk about the design camp karaoke tradition that James is taking part of in the photo above. Enjoy.

AIGA Minnesota’s Design Camp 2015: The Reflex Blue Show Conference Special

AIGA Minnesota's Design Camp

AIGA Minnesota’s Design Camp weather-wise, was so much better than my freezing experience from last year. For an event held October 2-4, 2015 in Northern Minnesota, temperature is a risk, but thankfully they throw a hoodie into the swag bag just in case you forgot to pack anything else with sleeves.

I did three recap blog posts for Neenah Paper, while at Madden’s at Gull Lake in addition to a few recordings we will release here.

Over the next couple months, expect five podcast interviews with the speakers at Design Camp, but to start off, we have this behind the scenes special with two of the amazing organizers of the event – Elise Matheny and Renee Ebert. Enjoy.

Emily Brick of Buzzfeed

It seems like only yesterday that we sent Ben Lueders off to cover some new fangled conference called the HOW Interactive Design Conference in San Francisco. I guess it’s been almost four years – and it’s now a conference held in three different cities. You know it’s hit the big-time conference label when it holds the three most important aspects of big conferenceness – a Stefan Mumaw workshop (seriously, go to any workshop this guy does), a great location (pretty sure that out of San Francisco, Chicago, and Boston this is covered somewhere), and a great speaker lineup – which leads us to today’s show.

Emily Brick is a Product Design for Buzzfeed. Through the magic of Skype, we talk about Buzzfeed apps, content on different modules, css framework, living styleguides, and hackwork at Buzzfeed. Enjoy.

Just listening to him, you can tell he’s a natural in front of an audience and a microphone. If I was in charge of a conference, I would put Brent right at the top of the list to MC – regardless of what kind of conference it was.

So, we speak Design Camp, branding a restaurant, YYES, and more.

AIGA Minnesota’s Design Camp 2014: The Reflex Blue Show Conference Special

AIGA Minnesota Design Camp 2014 Podcast Special

Over the past dozen years (which is how long I think I’ve known AIGA Minnesota’s Design Camp was a thing (turns out, it was around over twenty years before that)), I almost made it twice. Two years ago, we sent Ben Lueders instead, and he came back with five podcasts we released, as well as writing three recaps for Neenah Paper.

2014 proved to be the year I finally made it. Blogging for Neenah Paper, I wrote three recaps of the events and bonfire that happen at Madden’s at Gull Lake October 3–5, 2014.

Other than an additional upcoming four podcasts recorded with some of the speakers, vendors, and MC of the event, I also had the chance to sit down and speak with two of the committee members, Michael Cullen-Benson and Ben Sweeney. Hosting the nations largest regional conference as a local AIGA chapter is no small task, so I have to hand it to these people for doing an incredible job.

Josh

This week on The Reflex Blue Show, we speak with Josh Goodell about that UX / User Experience thing.

Every now and then, these shows get released in a different order than we record them – this one is apparent when we speak of A List Apart in the last few minutes, as we just had Sara Wachter-Boettcher (their Editor in Chief) on the last episode. I probably would have mentioned it, but at the time of this recording, that show had not even been lined up…

Anyway, this one was a lot of fun to record, and made me feel like I’ve been doing this web thing for a while when I have to recount stories “from the old days”, oh well, enjoy.

Our second (of five) interviews recorded at HOW Design Live in Boston was with Stefan Sagmeister of Sagmeister & Walsh.

I had a few things I was planning to talk about, but I could also tell that Stefan was more concerned with the room we were in than anyone else I had met, so there must have been something behind it. After mentioning that we met briefly backstage at the 2009 AIGA Make/Think Conference in Memphis, it was apparent that he’s passionate about the environment we decide to surround ourselves with, and what it means to us.

And this room was not living up to what it could be.

We then talk about the High Line, Memphis’ Cook Convention Center, a Castle, buying an axe on eBay, and happiness.

Kevin Carroll: The Reflex Blue Show #126

Kevin Carroll Podcast Interview

At the HOW Design Conference in Denver (was that really 2010?), Nate and I somehow recorded 12 podcasts (5 daily recaps, and 7 interviews), with the last one coming around half an hour after the closing keynote by Kevin Carroll. It was a crazy week, and we spoke a lot, both on the show and right around it, with Kevin about the great energy created when so many designers get in a room together. But, that’s a once a year thing, and the rest of the year? Some days are crazier than others.

Last week I walked into my office, and quickly found 2/3 of the building was without power – great, on the day I lined up to record with Kevin via the Internet – if we can get anything. Thankfully, a number of extension cords strung together could get the phone and modem going again, even if we would have to record with only light from the window, this could work. It did work, until the rest of the power went out right as we were wrapping up, I guess that’s one way to end a recording – just pull the plug on all the power in the building, call it a day? Good thing we were recording from a laptop so I didn’t lose the file… I guess an email from my phone to Kevin saying, sorry, we just lost all power will have to suffice for a thanks, as Skype isn’t coming back anytime soon.

So, with that, I have to thank Steve Gordon for co-hosting, and Kevin for being a great guest, even if we did basically end our chat by hanging up on him with no notice, we’ll try not to repeat that part.

We speak with Kevin Carroll about his books, his digital press kit created by Willoughby Design, his ball collection going on tour in museums, TEDx talks, and of course the reason we brought him on this week – his help in creating Why I Design.

Next week we’ll bring the second installment of the Why I Design project, until then, I hope you enjoy the chat.

The ‘official first episode’ of season seven is with none other than Armin Vit of Under Consideration.

First off, big thanks to the American Advertising Federation of Omaha, who brought Armin into town to keynote their great yearly student event – Meet the Pros. And bigger thanks to them for letting us bring him to our office to chat on The Reflex Blue Show.

Last time we had Armin on for a whole show, he had just announced closing down Speak Up, but this has not slowed down the activity of Under Consideration. It may have caused the opposite.

On this episode we talk about the newest Under Consideration venture – an Austin speaker series called the Austin Initiative for Graphic Awesomeness – and the mascot the Baticon (shown above, and designed by Brandiose). We also speak about Brand New, and Armin’s thought on the myth of inspiration.

Steve Gordon and Cate White – The Season 6 Finale: The Reflex Blue Show #123

The Season 6 Finale

Season 6 of The Reflex Blue Show has been quite the adventure. We started out by sending Ben Lueders to AIGA Minnesota’s Design Camp to capture a few interviews, then having Tom Nemitz help us recap the football game ads, before setting down to record most of the season at the usual location in Omaha – the Eleven19 office. But we did get a few shows recorded on the road – HOW in San Francisco  and AIGA‘s conference in Minneapolis. Somehow, we avoided recording any shows via Skype or ichat or phone this year.

For the season 6 finale, we bring in Steve Gordon and Cate White to talk about the year, the trends, and what’s next. We also spend some time speaking Command X, of course.

Enjoy, we’ll be back in 2014.

Joe Sparano – #SolveProblems

As one of the most quoted designers in Nebraska, Joe Sparano is looking forward to what’s next. After nine years at Oxide Design and teaching some college students (as well as middle schoolers) about design, he’s decided to take the steps to find his long-term goals in the field.

So, we talk about looking at grad schools, his #solveproblems hashtag, and the soon to launch Solve Problems website.

Justin Kemerling & Jake Welchert: The Reflex Blue Show #121

Justin Kemerling & Jake Welchert

Whether you like it or not, politics is/can be big business, and big business knows they need design (or should know by now, right?). Maybe you do like it. So, we decide to spend this week speaking to two Omaha-area designers that have done a bit of work in the political arena recently.

One look at the incredible design work of Justin Kemerling (the images in our header above are part of the eight social media images he mentions during the show), and it’s apparent that he’s been doing this for a while. We also bring in Jake Welchert to speak about working as a designer inside of a campaign office for close to a year (in his case, he was working directly for the Obama for America campaign in 2012).

I had a fun time talking with these two about design, enjoy.

2013 AIGA Head, Heart, Hand Conference Special: DAY TWO

2013 AIGA Head, Heart, Hand Conference Special: DAY TWO

In our final recap of the AIGA Head, Heart, Hand conference in Minneapolis, we start in the exhibit hall by speaking to Brian French and Jerry French of French Paper, and Jamie Saunders of Neenah Paper.

Just outside of that area, we find Cate White finishing up her final project for Command X (thrilled to see someone from Omaha in the competition – and happy to say she made the final round of three. Way to go, Cate!), and thus had the opportunity to get the thoughts from a contestant while in the middle of the competition. We also got some input from her mentor for the event, AIGA Medalist Rick Valicenti.

Finally, we wrap up our event coverage with someone who has been in the Minneapolis, and AIGA scene, Joe Isaak.

Thanks for following our covereage of this great event, and we look forward to the next one in 2015.

2013 AIGA Head, Heart, Hand Conference Special: DAY ONE

Well, the AIGA conference in Minneapolis lived up to the hype. In the first (of two) recaps I recorded while there. I speak with a stellar cast of attendees, speakers, national co=presidents, and more. That’s right, we bring in Justin Ahrens, Drew Davies, Stanley Hainsworth, Jim Moran, Tom Nemitz, and Emily Potts to get their thoughts on the first day of conferencing in the Twin Cities.

As for my thoughts, I blogged them all over at Neenah Paper’s Against the Grain, and you can find them here:

The Reflex Blue Show will be back later in the week with our second recap. Enjoy.

Ashley McFeely & Steve Gordon

This week, we bring back frequent guests Ashley McFeely and Steve Gordon to talk about what they’ve been up to lately, how to talk about your design work, what skills are best to have now, and more. This was one of those shows we had so much fun recording, that we ended up talking more after the show than during. Enjoy.

And next week I’ll be back with recaps from the AIGA conference.

Brian Buirge & Jason Bacher (GFDA): The Reflex Blue Show #119

Brian Buirge and Jason Bacher

Brian Buirge and Jason Bacher were on the 5th day of a 52 day road trip, with at least 20 confirmed event stops (they are probably stopping by your local AIGA chapter this month, so check them out), when they swung by the studio to chat. And then, well off to speak at an AIGA Nebraska event of course.

While at our recording studio (the Eleven19 office in Omaha), we talk about how they started up Good Fucking Design Advice, what’s next, and what the first week of the road has been like. Their site does give amazing advice, and these two do know design – I think they may be onto something. And for a visual of what a week on the road looks like, they have Danielle Miller with them to document it. You can see their stop by 36 Point at the 2:20 mark of their first week’s clip.

Drew Davies: The Reflex Blue Show #118

Drew Davies

For years, on both this podcast and the old Be A Design Cast, we’ve been promoting Drew Davies for the AIGA National Board. Well, a couple years ago, he made it (listeners know he’s been on both of our podcasts a number of times, and even since being on the board). Well, besides being what I assume is the first person from Omaha to make this honor, he went another step further, and decided to just be President of the whole thing (or, well, co-President at least). Regardless, this is great for the organization, and great for Omaha and the design community here.

So, we bring Drew back to the show to discuss. Then we discuss all the great things his company, Oxide Design Co., has been up to recently.

And yes, we’ll be recapping from the AIGA design conference in Minneapolis in October, so we hope to see you there. And since we do play favorites around here, we will be rooting for another person from Omaha, Cate White, to win this Command X thing!

We’ll be back in two weeks with the crew of Good Fucking Design Advice.

This is the last of our HOW Live shows for the year. Well, sort of. I did a few other recordings while there for a new project we plan to start up soon, so you may here a little more from the guests we spoke to, although in a different format. Until then, we bring back Debbie Millman.

We mostly speak about dealing with rejection and being President of AIGA for three years.

I also need to thank Nate Voss for co-hosting this, as well as a couple others at HOW, so, thanks Nate!

We will be back in two weeks with current AIGA National Co-President, Drew Davies.

With guests (and HOW speakers) Justin Ahrens and Jim Krause, we speak about work-life balance, 30 in 60, story, pugs, and more. We’ll be back next week. And big thanks goes out to the HOW staff for helping us set up an interview room again, much appreciated.

And being set in the backdrop of San Francisco is paying off in spades, as you can see by the photo above that I got from Musée Mécanique off of the Pier, above.

So, what do we have to look forward to, and what is this year’s event bringing? We do a quick recap of the day and expectations for the week with Dyana Valentine, Jamie Saunders, and first-time attendee Kelsey Erck. Enjoy.

Flywheel Meets Big Omaha: The Reflex Blue Show #112

Flywheel Meets Big Omaha : The Reflex Blue Show #112

Just over six years ago we interviewed a few freelancers who shared space in midtown Omaha. Since then, we’ve moved to 36 Point and started The Reflex Blue Show –and Nate moved to Kansas City. And those designers? Ryan moved to New York, John Henry moved to San Francisco shortly after coming onto our show to talk about dogs, and we need to get Adam back on the show to talk about what he’s been up to, as it’s been three years since his last appearance, and same thing with Dave. And the office they shared? The Divvy Collective space lasted a year, and was then filled by a company called BrightMix.

BrightMix would move onto other things, as we discuss on this show with founder Dusty Davidson, and one of the designers they hired along the way, Rick Knudtson.

What kind of things? Creating Tripleseat, a software program for event spaces; starting Silicon Prairie News, a website focusing on the startups in the midwest; co-founding three yearly conferences focused on innovation and entrepreneurship in Big Omaha, Big Des Moines, and Big Kansas City, with Jeff Slobotski; and now launching a WordPress hosting platform built for designers in Flywheel. We also speak a bit about design and development. Enjoy.

Adobe Goes to the Cloud: The Reflex Blue Show #111

Adobe Goes to the Cloud

This week we bring back Brandon Herbel and Steve Gordon to, wait, let me go back for a minute first. When chatting at River City Social Club, next door to my office, with Steve and Brandon a while back, I found out they were super early adopters of the Adobe Creative Cloud. They liked the pricing at the time, and it let them get the newest from Adobe. Well, turns out that this is not only the way of the future, it’s the way of the present, as it’s about to be the only way to get access to the Adobe creative suite. So, who better to see what this is about then two designers who have been using it.

Then we speak about the new AIGA membership plans. I just got my new card, says I’ve been a member since 2002?

And we end the show with a good venting of things we visually have had enough of. Enjoy.

Last week, the Omaha design community witnessed a double-header of an event, featuring Aaron Draplin. Starting with a luncheon hosted by the great people at the American Advertising Federation – Omaha, and an evening talk hosted by AIGA Nebraska.

In between this busy day was the recording of a podcast with AIGA Nebraska board members Craig Hughes and Nicholas Burroughs (who also now works with me at Eleven19), Nick Evans of To The Moon Studios, and Aaron Draplin. By the time we’re done, even Steve Gordon swings through for a segment.

If you want a quick recap, we speak about Don Rickles, Draplin’s thoughts on the state of signage in America, Field Notes, Merch, The DDC, and more.

John Henry Müller’s Pack: The Reflex Blue Show #108

John Henry Müller is definitely a household name in the Omaha Design community. His involvement with such things as Big Omaha, The Mastercraft Building and the I Live in Omaha project are simply legendary around these parts. So when the news hit the presses that John’s famous web-shop “What Cheer” would be leaving the world of client work, and entering fully into the startup world – we at 36point knew we needed the inside scoop.

Turns out that John, along with his buddies Alex Gates and John Hobbes are gonna be taking the helm of a dog-enthusiast related start-up called PACK, based in San Francisco. (In fact, since this podcast was recorded – Mr. Müller announced, perhaps, the biggest news of all: he’s actually moving to San Francisco! Read his announcement HERE.)

Undoubtedly, Omaha is gonna miss this pillar of creativity and innovation – but if we know anything about John, we have not seen the last of him and his influence here in the Silicon Prairie. Please enjoy this light-hearted and candid interview with a pretty swell guy.

The Von Glitschka “Pocast” Extravaganza Special: The Reflex Blue Show #107

When I first heard that world-renown “Drawsigner” and long-time RBS friend, Von Glitschka was starting to charge 5 dollars for custom logos – I did a double-take. “How could this be?” Then I saw what he called this new design product: “5ive Minute Logo“. Brilliant. Donovan and I could instantly see what Von was doing: poking fun at some of the online “logo mills”, showing-off some of his amazing creative abilities, and having a heck of a lot of fun doing so.

After his keynote speech at Meet the Pros 2013, Donovan and I kidnapped Von and interviewed him in our secret design lair. Tune in to this week’s podcast to hear more about 5ive Minute Logos, logo mills, Meet the Pros and Von’s awesome design books.

– Ben Lueders

(NOTE: Both the RBS image and the Von Extravaganza image are 5ive Minute Logo originals! And yes, we realize that Von misspelled podcast in the graphic – but hey, that’s what we get for paying 5 bucks for a logo, right?)

Design Camp – Eric Madsen : The Reflex Blue Show #105

I was instantly drawn into Eric Madsen‘s Design Camp presentation by his deep sense of story and self-awareness. At first it was hard to see how his talk had anything to do with design – as it started simply with memories and photographs from his childhood years in Texas. But as his story progressed, I was suddenly reminded of something: we’re not just designers – we’re also people. In Eric’s talk I was struck with the reality that our lives are an intricate design in and of themselves – with lots of hidden nuance and meaning.

This podcast is less an interview with a professional about the field of Graphic Design – and more a conversation with a man who just so happens to be an accomplished designer and illustrator. It turns out that Eric is also an accomplished musician (he actually knew John Denver!) – so be warned that there is a lot of talk about guitars and musical influences in our talk…
